Hello Everyone, my first post here

Ive been reading many articles here, and Id like to ask about choosing oil for my vehicle...

this is Volvo v40 (2000) 2.0 engine, 190k km on odometer.

When I bought it, it had Mobil 15w40 inside, I changed it to Mobil 10w40 (semi synthetic) But now, Id like to switch to relly good oil. I thing I need a thick one, I can see some oil leaks on my engine.. Please help me to choose: Valvoline Maxlife 10w40, or maybe Quaker State Higher Mileage 10w40? Or maybe something else? Anyone heard of Petro Canada? Are they good oils?

Thanks!

On that little engine it doesn't need a "thick" oil.

I think maybe you may need to do an auto-rx cycle, and then go back down to the correct 5w30 oil that is recommended for the engine.

Or find the source of your leaks, it may not be gasket related but just an o ring seal from a sensor etc.

Mobil 10/40 being semi synthetic? That has to be only the Mobil 7500 oil.

Well, I am switching to Castrol High Mileage 5w30 on my next OCI and that might be a good choice for you as well. It might help with the leak and is a great oil overall.

Thanks for tips, but. here in Poland we don't have Castrol High Mileage 5w30, only 15w40 HM

I read abut this valvoline being good one, but not sure.. maybe 10w30 instead of 10w40?

I was also told by the mechanic, that if I have semi-synthetic now, I shouldnt switch do fullsynthetic, is that right?

I think going with thick weights is typical european thing. My mom (also in Poland) has an '02 V40 T4 with the 2.0 turbo engine, and the dealer keeps feeding it Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w-60 (probably Castrol Edge nowadays). I'm not sure that it really needs such a thick oil, but it doesn't seem to be hurting it either.

Czah, you should be OK with that Mobil 10w-40 semisynth.

EDIT: Oh yeah, looking at castrol.pl, they recommend Edge 5w30 or Magnatec 5w-40 for your engine.

I read a lot about Auto-RX, I think it would be good idea to run a cycle. Do you know if the only way I can buy it is via the internet (auto-rx webpage) ? Or is there another way to get it in Europe?

ps. Recently I was reading this forum and I fell that 10w40 is overall not good oil, what do you think? Should I switch to 10w30 maybe?

Merkava_4:

it's 2000 (March), for the first 3 years it was a Volvo Finance Company car...

Per Amsoil's site:

2000 Volvo V40 with the 1.9L 4-Cyl. Engine code 25 (B4204T2)

-20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit: 10w30
Below 86 degrees Fahrenheit: 5w30
Below 104 degrees Fahrenheit: 5W-40
