Hey everyone,

I was wondering what oil you would recommend for my 82 Toyota Supra? It has a pre June 84 5M-GE engine.

I know the oil certs have evolved since the engine was made, as well as the manufacturing. I'm currently running Pennzoil 10w-40 conventional.

Edit: I should have mentioned, I do mostly city driving, and I do like to drive in a sporty fashion. I also have valve clatter when I start it up cold, even though the dipstick says its full.

Welcome to BITOG...

I don't know about the oil but the 82 Supra is one of my all time favorite cars. Got any pics you can post?

If you have valve noise, you could try Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO) in the crankcase. Some here will say MMO is not any good and it's not a good idea to use it in the oil, but many others have had excellent results with MMO quieting noisy lifters, valve train noise, etc.

I am no expert by any means but I would think the 10W40 Pennzoil would be good for an older engine. I am running Quaker State 10W30 conventional and it is doing great, my engine has 133K on it and it runs very smooth and has a nice even idle. It just runs and sounds like it is better lubricated on QS than the oil I used before.

The way I understand it, PYB is better at cleaning and QS is good for better lubrication and protection against wear on the internals of the engine. Others here will surely have better info and ideas for you.

to BITOG!

I would run some sort of cleaning agent in that engine as it probably saw some not so great oil over the years and probably is suffering from some varnish and minor sludge.

I would also run a bottle of Techron, Amsoil PI or Redline SI-1 in the fuel during this time to help clean up the inside of the combustion chamber & valves. It will also help clean the rings a bit as well.

A couple runs with something like a 15w50 with a quart of MMO substituted for a quart of engine oil which should dilute it to a 40wt should do nicely.

I would honestly sugguest Mobil-1 15w50 for this application and this engine with the MMO added to it.

Use a quality oil filter like a Purolator, or Toyota

Then go back to your regular oil and a good quality filter and drive happy.

5w30 year round would be fine in this engine if it's not consuming oil.

Ill take a look at MMO. It only has 69,000 mi on it, and it burns about a qt of oil over 3000 mi.

Rust really kills the classics. Please PM me ways to fix the rust on mine, i have a classic (Not the Probe, duh) with some rustyness.

And Stevie, cant he keep using the 15W-50 with MMO? Or would you discontinue the use of MMO at some point?

Synthetic makes the Oil flow like a 10W-40 anyway

btw, I didnt know 82 Supras looked that good. I like it.

That sucks.. thats the way these cars go though. I would rather have it rust and have the engine fall out rather that having to scrap it b/c it doesn't run anymore. Just the other day, some dude on the highway rolled down his windows and told me to slow down so he could take a pic lol.

I have a low mileage 84 Toyota Pick up, it too would use about a Liter in 3k miles, until I ran a couple of OCI's of 15w40 (Super Tech) and then one of 10w30 Valvoline Maxlife (High Mileage) Now the engine is very quite and oil consumption is negligible.

I also like to think that is Rust is ever Professionally or semi-professionally dealt with (They have this stuff called "Rust Reformer") that it can be "Saved." OCD Waxing and polishing, treating the Rust area with Kid gloves and not even washing it full pressure when washing the car, tc etc. Plus Bondo.

That car is the same age as myself.

Carburated?

He could keep using the MMO and the 15w50 if he wants to sure... I just thought he was more of a Dino man from his original post.

15w50 with the MMO permanently would be good in this old engine. (Bullet proof engine by the way)

I disagree, a car that clean is worth a rebuilt engine!

As for rust... Have it fixed professionally and then find a Ziebart or make the drive to Canada and have it rust-sprayed at Krown Rust Control.

You can see pictures of my 20 year old Dodge Caravan on here that was rust-free at 460K KM's when it went to the scrap yard because of an electrical fire. It was treated to krown every year for 15 years.

Fair enough... 6M, 7M, 1J and 2J swaps are VERY popular in these.

Nope, DOHC Electronic Fuel Injection. It was the top of the line Toyota engine at the time (except for the V12 they put in their JDM limos). Light years ahead of the domestics.

And they are bullet proof. Thats what happens when you have a 2.8L I6, and it only has a 8:1 CR. That also makes an awesome platform for Turbo

How about a racing oil,Pennzoil GT or Valvoline VR1. I`m going to order another case of the Pennzoil GT. My fave oil so far!

Nice car. I remember those Supras very well, worked on a few. I also really like the 1987 model Supra too. My favorite Toyota though was the 1977 Celica Liftback. I really like those but they only made that one for the one year, 1977. I had a 78 and an 81 Celica, both were really good cars but they had some rust too.

I would say get the rust fixed and keep the Supra running forever. Nice car.

If I hadn't bought my '80 Firebird FORMULA, my wife and I would have bought that generation SUPRA. Love them. Never see em any more.
