what oil filter is currently the best ?

I’ll swap filters on my car and see if there is any effect on my oil pressures seen on the Scangauge 3. I doubt there will be any meaningful differences among filters.
You will not see any oil pressure difference just because of the bypass valve setting unless you rev the engine so high that the oil pump goes into pressure relief earlier with one filter vs the other due to the filter's flow performance. And besides, you're changing the whole oil filter, not just the bypass valve setting in the same exact oil filter - that's the test you'd have to do.

With a coil spring type bypass valve, additional pressure force above the cracking pressure isn't going to result in a "fully open valve". The coil spring has a spring constant that will make the bypass valve open progressively with added pressure force on the valve. It's not like the valve just snaps to fully open once the bypass pressure is reached and the bypass valve starts cracking open.

Yeah, the Purolator "flat spiral spring" is a different setup. There was a member here that also did some opening pressure testing on those here. Don't recall who, but I bet if I ping @Sayjac he can provide the link to that thread like he has in the past.
Well the spring will follow Hooke’s law but it is a predictable almost linear response. The Purolator flat spring valve was not confidence inspiring but there are vehicles that probably have hundreds of thousands of miles having run this type of filter.

Sure can. I particularly remember it because at the time some members questioned the Puro flat spring psi rating reliability because it is difficult to push open with a finger. Then member @AuthorEditor came along and tested it using p=f/a. While he called "crude" 'I'd' call it effective and convincing. I'm still impressed by his ingenuity and resolve to test it. Thread is getting harder to find with search though, but luckily it is still in the system. As an aside, have a Bosch Premium (US made) 3323 using flat spring cut open ready to post, as expected no problem passing a flashlight test.

Link also has a link to Jim Allen's bypass events being rare testing there too. Unfortunately, the corresponding gauge reading pics gone, but if interested still worth the read, imo.

Something that should be pointed out here based on recent posts/dicussion is that this discussion of "which filter is currently best" is aimed at results of cutting open cannister filters. The cartridge-style filters should be a separate dicussion as there is no drain back valve or pressure relief valve...just "raw" filter media. Example is the Fram Endurance that seems to be having some QC issues on the cannister side, the cartridge version I just used looked fine to me and I'm sure is providing excellent filtration.

looking to get another filter for my change, was going to go with oreillys microgard select MSL57356 for $10 but then i recalled that the carquest 84356 for $10 is apparently 99.5% at 20 microns while the oreillys microgard select is 99% at 25 microns

carquest premium was recently updated i think a few months to be 99% at 20 microns and they are both $10 a piece

i know the diff between 20 and 25 microns probably doesn't matter but if im paying $10 for both isn't it a no brainer to get the carquest premium now vs the microgard select?

however im confused cuz they both seem to look like there made by PG so wouldn't they be the same?

^^^ I'd use either one, but might as well go for the CQ Premium if you have the choice.
