Greetings:
Just purchased 1994 Dakota LWB 3.9 v-6, auto w/od, 200k, infrequent oil changes, from friend. Mostly for local driving even in bad winter (Indiana) Suggestions for reasonable priced but good oil, filter, brake fluid (new brakes coming) AT fluid? Don't want 0w-60 german, not 10w-30 non detergent generic Autozone either.Thoughts w/out flame war?

I've got a 95. congrats on the beater! there's no reason not to use Purolator Pure Ones or Napa Gold. as far as oil.... hmmm.... Are you tryin to clean it up or just limp it along? right now Penzz Plat has a $15 rebate - use their 10w-30.

gee, does the timing chain rattle? mine did when I got it at 65k.

Whoever has the nerve to tell you to use non-detergent multi-viscosity oil in your dakota should be locked in an institution, period.

Happy Halloween BTW!

That Magnum 3.9L engine will be happy on ANYTHING you give it. I have the 5.2L in my '97 Dak, same basic engine...the 3.9L just has two fewer cylinders. The Mobil 1 that was in it leaked like a sieve. I've since been running a number of different oils. The Shell Rotella T 10W-30 was good, but a bit thick I think. I've currently got Valvoline MaxLife 5W-30 in it. I scored two of the free Peak oil deals from Pep Boys a while back, and those are likely the next I'll use in it (in 10W-30). Any of the conventional oils in 10W-30 or 5W-30 would be good choices. I usually run the Mopar MO-090 filters on mine ($5.24 each at Walmart), but scored 10 of the AA16 filters from Advance on clearance a while ago, so those are next. They're also Purolators (though a little different inside).

For ATF, use the Mopar ATF+4, or any of the generics, like Valvoline or Super Tech that adhere to that standard.

My is a '93 with the 3.9 V6. I've used many brands of oil in mine since I purchased it at ~100K miles. I currently have a QS 8A on it because the shorter filter helps with the space limitations. My engine does not leak or use a bit of oil. I had to change the distributor gear in mine (Google it for info) because it shelled out and it was a dealer only part. My timing chain is rattling, but I'm going to run it that way and when it goes, the whole truck will probably hit the salvage yard.
It's been a pretty good truck, but the gas mileage isn't. Run whatever SM oil you can find on sale. It's doesn't care. Oh, yea. The tranny is always hunting up and down for the right gear, but they all do it and the brand of ATF+4 doesn't matter either.
