What mileage on a vehicle starts making you nervous?

My sister hit 200,000 miles in her 03 Camry yesterday. Nothing has ever been repaired on that car.

For me it's not mileage, but age. If serviced correctly the engine/transmission will outlast the rest of the vehicle. When they hit the 12 year mark I start looking for a new vehicle. The interiors start coming apart, AC fails, lots of little things start stacking up. I just rolled 180k and haven't had to fix anything I didn't break through stupid. The duratec 3.0 is known to run almost forever.

My roommates 2001 Malibu however, it's got some internal engine issues, pretty sure the LIM gasket needs replacement, the cam position sensor is bad, the EGR valve went bad. Alternator died. Suspension was totally and completely shot at 80k. The shocks had no damping at all and it was scary over 40mph. The older they get the more iffy they become.

I got pretty nervous when My 1993 Civic hit 200,000 miles and really nervous when It hit 300,000 miles. There's no way it will do 400,000 miles

but it did! Now with over 531,000 miles, the nerves come on, there's no way it will ever do 600,000 miles...still running!

I don't go by mileage but by sounds and visual clues. Obviously any oil consumption would tell me to look closer at the engine. On a automatic transmission the little chirp you will hear pulling away from a stop is another sign.

I am in agreement here.... My car has 253k miles on her... VQ motor 6 cylinder... I am not worried just yet

I start to wonder...When I can't go longer than a month or two without something breaking...that is more of a problem than the number on the dashboard.

It depends on the vehicle and the owner. I wouldn't worry at all about a GM 5.3L with 250k miles so long as it has a clean bill of health. (compression, leakdown, noise, etc...) However, an early 2000s Ram 1500 or Durango with 125k miles on the original transmission makes me cringe.
