What makes oil quiet?

Although, I'll use just about any oil held in high regard at BITOG. I use some brands more than others mainly due to price.

I have been liking QS oils in my engines for this very reason of how much more quiet the engines are on QS oils(QSGB, DEFY, QSUD). There are other brands/weights that are similar and some of these other brands are store brands(with known quality). I can't say that the other brands have been as consistantly quiet as the QS, from OCI to OCI.

And although I am a fan of Mobil 1 Products overall(ATF, Gear Oil, Lube), I am not a fan of their Syn oils that I have used in my engines for the very reason of noise, or should I say...more audiable!...No, I haven't tried'em all, just the grades spec'd for my particular engines.

I still have another half dozen quarts of M1 0W-40 on the shelf, so it'll either get dumped in the Honda, dumped in the mower, or relegated to top off use for the Buick.

I may have to eat these words.

Last I finally had the chance to get the Buick on a clean, dry, empty highway. Gave her an italian tuneup and the cold start this morning was noticeably quieter - virtually no valvetrain noise and even piston slap was quieter.

Unfortunately, it's hard to get the RPMs up during typical driving due to the frigid temps and snow-packed streets.

Thanks everyone for the responses, I realize I should have worded my question differently since oil doesn't produce any noise.

I'm coming from a Toyota Camry which was always quiet no matter what oil I put in it. My Sonata with it's DI engine is definitely more vocal but becomes whisper quiet when warm.

I noticed the 2.4 GLS (non-turbo) model is much louder at start-up, it uses 5W-20 which I think leads to increased engine noise.

The KIA/Hyundai's are rather well known for being rather noisy at start up. We have a 2012 and I don't find it especially loud at start up although like you noted its quieter when warmed up.

Quietest oil we've ever had in our KIA was gold bottle Castrol Edge. I plan to go back to it when the stash I bought at a smoking deal is used up. For reference thus far I've also used QSGB and Pennzoil Ultra in it. Next OCI is PP then I'm done.

Not a fan of 5w20 in ours either having done multiple OCI's and a UOA on it in ours, next purchase for the KIA will be 5w30.

Looks like I'm going to have to try Castrol Edge sometime. I currently have 1 jug of PU and QSUD on hand.
