What makes a car "beautiful"?

I'm not entirely sure. Certain cars are real lookers.
Who could resist a Lancia Fuvia coupe, a Ferrari 330 P3, or an E-Type Jag?
I agree that paid for and reliable are always nice, but there are some cars you would just like to get your hands on, based upon their looks alone.

Some cars I find beautiful, for various reasons:

Mechanically robust, about the pinnacle in great engineering of vehicles, IMO:

About the best lines Ive seen in a consumer-grade car (i.e. not a Ferrari or other car that I can't afford):

Ditto... could afford one of these, but they dont make them anymore... One of the best looking cars out there, IMO:

A car that IMO is a top notch engineering, design, and integration marvel that is great to drive, does everything well, and yet is available at a very reasonable price:

This one gets called beautiful because it is the car that has everything right without trying too hard. Todays cars have too many doodads, this "luxury" car is more stripped than today's base Hyundai, yet stickered for $31k in 1991 dollars. And for a reason. Rather than showing off technical prowess, super power density, huge HP numbers, etc., it just feels nice, fun and enjoyable to drive for any conditions. It can be my go-kart on one day, and the grocery getter on another, does everything with respect to driving well, and its a BMW that is paid for, a rare item in the middle class world...

Gonna' approach this from the negative angle.

Ugly.

Putrid.

Revolting.

1974 Matador

Ugliness defined in sheet metal and glass.

Pictures do not convey the pure horrid ugliness of the vehicle, it has to be seen in real life to truly appreciate how barfngly ugly the car is.... kinda' like some of the users hereabouts.

JHZR2, your tastes run very similar to mine. I like classic lines, symmetry, and balance. Something that looks solid but not overly flashy or gimmicky. That MB you posted was always my favorite design of all time.

Today, I still like most of the MB and BMW designs...not the sporty, convertible ones, but more of the coupes and sedans.

I also love the lines and features of the Acura TL. And call it an appliance if you will, but I love the "boring" and conservative look of my '07 Accord Sedan. It just fits my tastes well.

I guess I like angles and facets better than curves and swoops.

obbop, I felt that way about almost ALL of the old AMC offerings.

I also had great disdain for the old Dodge Pickups, like this one:

I'm with JHZR2, especially on the 2 BMW's and the Saab.

This is growing on me if it's done up right. Plus a 5L v8 doesn't hurt..

Of course there's more than one way to make a car beautiful...

Wow, I was beginning to think I was the only one on the planet who thought the Saab 9-3 was good-looking. I happen to think they are among the most beautiful cars on the road, and definitely THE most beautiful in their class.

...Well except for the '07+. Haven't decided what I think about that yet.

Id agree... accords have always had a decent look for a mass-produced consumer car, lines that were conservative yet hinted a slight sporty aggression in them. Good point.

Now that I think in those lines, I think that the older camry (made around 1998 or so, then discontinued at some point between 99-01) is also a decent looking set of lines for a car. Nothing fancy, but something that is optically pleasant.
