What is up with Purolator?

I'm ridding my stash of them and thank goodness! The one I put on my Dad's truck yesterday, the threads had metal shavings all over, not to mention paint peeling everywhere. I wiped the threads with a damp paper towel as best I good and hooked my shop vac to the oulet and let er rip; it actually opened the ADBV!

I really like the construction of these filters, especially for the price, but no way am I going to keep purchasing a product with so blatantly obvious quality control problems.

Am I wrong for feeling jipped? I'd rather not have a bunch of metal particles hitting the bearings upon first startup after an oil change, but that's just me.

I currently have a PureOne in use on my 06 Suzuki Forenza, and although I've had no issues with it, will be changing the brand of filter I use on it. I'll either be going with a SuperTech or placing an order with Fleet -- I haven't decided yet.

I just put a recently purchased PL30001 on my Jeep, I took a good look at the threads and they were fine, paint was fine, couldn't find any visible defects.

I have an identical filter that I just removed that is currently draining, I'll cut it open this weekend and have a look.

It's been like this for a while now. It's about 75% of the filters. I'm tired of having to inspect several filters at the store each time I stock up. I can deal with the peeling paint around the bottom of the can, but metal shavings on the threads and likely on the clean side of the filter element is just absurd.

I've been a huge proponent of Purolator before; not anymore. The actual construction design of their filters is top notch IMO but when you have residual metal shavings in the filter from the threads being cut, that's just unacceptable.

This is a serious problem. I use these filters and inspect each one and have never found the metal shavings. I have seen a few with paint problems. I wonder if the area of the country and your supplier could be the problem. I am in North Carolina and just don't see this. I'll be checking closer than ever and thanks for the heads up.

I find this from ALL brands that Purolator manufactures, mainly the Premium Plus line of their own brand and the Pep Boys Proline Brand. The problem is equal between these two.

The Supertechs I've recently bought looked like they were manufactured in a harmedically sealed environment. I'm at a loss as Purolators have given me fantastic service and upon cutting them open, they are indeed built like a tank. Like I said, no more. Metal shavings everywhere is complete B.S.

I haven't run into metal shavings, but I don't think I've had a single Purolator (including Quaker State and AAP versions) where there wasn't some sort of paint problem on the edge. AC Delco, ST, Bosch (all Champs, I know

) and the Napa/Wixs I have don't seem to have this problem.

That's too bad- but you can get stinkers with any brand of oil filter. I've seen some very rough AC-Delcos, mfg by Champion, about 5 years ago. Poorly cut threads & a little surface rust on Wix, my personal favorite, about 3 years ago. Only real oil filter failure I ever had was on a Purolator Premium Plus, about 5 years ago- the seam joining the base plate & shell was poorly done, & it emptied all that nice new oil muy pronto! No, I didn't declare war on Purolator, it can happen with anything.

Strange, isn't it, that Purolators wearing their own brand would show all these problems recently, while all the Purolator-mfg house-brand filters I have- Advance Auto's Totalgrips, bought last January, and Havoline-brand bought from Fred's between ~Feb & Nov this year- all have good cleanly cut threads, with no cooties to be seen.

-Drew99GT, i sympathize with you on the metal shavings around the threads. I have a pureone with similar problems. Im still going to use it. I tried my best to clean off the shavings around the funky, mishapen threads with a q-tip. Im still going to buy pureones, but not the ones with messed up threads.

Don't we all inspect the filter before purchasing it?

I do! The main reason is not to inspect only for defects - but to inspect the filter number inside the box too.

A couple of brother BITOGERS have sold me mixed bag stashes of their 24458 Purolator filters, some PureOnes, and some of the Premium Plus. All this metal-shaving talk got me curious, and unboxing all 8 of them (one set of six were vacuum-packed in food wrapping, so I dunno what they looked like out of the box), these here are clean as a whistle. No shavings, dents, paint scrapes, nothing. The PureOnes, I'm content running them for two OCI, the Premium Plus, for one OCI (I do 5K-7.5K OCI). Cut open, these filters after two OCI look as good as new, and flow hot in lockstep with engine warmup. Not even beginning to load these filters up, even with 12K on them. These filters, oversized L and PL24458 filters must be at least a couple of years old, and are built by Purolator, not by Bosche. The present-day equivalent is the PL14459, a dixie-cup by comparison. As are my Hyundai OEM filters which I have 10 or 12 of.

Sorry, Bosche, but it seems like complaints of sloppy workmanship in Purolators started with the recent takeover. This talk of shoddy Puros is very recent.

Looking into it, however, a good alternative is the WIX 51347, or NAPA Gold 1347, which is an oversize equivalent to the Purolator 14459/24458 and 20073, 20MMX1.5 thread for Hyundais, Hondas, and some Fords and Nissans. The WIX/NAPA Gold is a filter good for a 2 OCI cycle, I'd wager. At 6.50 a little expensive, but for 2 OCI, pretty reasonable for a good build, high burst pressure, and oversize to boot..

I regret buying two at a time like i always do; due to convenience issue of having to go back for another one. That's why i ended up with one bad and one good pureone during my recent trip to the store. Never again will i make that buying mistake.

I would stick with Wix/Napa gold, but it gives me higher startup pressure in the morning vs. Pureones. I tend to believe its normal or maybe weird but i feel uncomfortable with the fact that it's doing that. Anyone with a Nissan Titan V8 that used pureone and then switched off to a Wix/napa gold, observed this strange phenomenom?

What's wrong with your higher startup pressure? Is this with the same oil and viscosity - at the same time of the year - in relation to weather? Are you sure you are not getting a different degree of fast idle recently? Is the reading you're taking beyond the gauge number your engine book calls for?

Hmmmmmmm toocrazy, I think you're on to something with the Bosch/Purolator merger or whatever business conglomeration happened.

Or maybe the stores in my area just get the "2nds" if you will! Who knows.

777, I usually do inspect them in the store but one time a while back, the register lady yelled out "WE HAVE A LOOKER!"

I bet these places are tired of BITOGers in their stores

I dont see why anyone would have a problem with somebody who looks at the filters, I have looked at all sorts of filters even with the store folk nearby and it was clear that I was just trying to look at the biggest truck filter and the smallest motorcycle filter out of curiosity and nobody said a word. If someone said that to me I would continue what I was doing either that or explain that there are bad ones out there, if that is an issue to a store I either wouldn't shop there or discuss the bad experience with their manager and explain whats going on with the filters and why someone would want to look. I understand breaking seals on packages but looking into a filter box!?! Odd...

Oh, I gave the #@$%! a piece of my mind! She no longer works at that particular Advance Auto anyway - she didn't know her #@$%! from a hole in the ground to start.
