What is this item? John Deere heater?

I thought this may be an immersion heater of some sort. But searching for such a JD product yields nothing.

This item was in storage with a bunch of other JD parts and items. There are no markings except the JD decal and dial. Cord is very heavy duty and the rubber is stamped E-55387 16/3 SJT 60oC CSA LL-44378.

I have searched all of those terms online and can’t even identify the cord or what its applications are.

I plugged it in and tried the dial in several positions but it’s not generating heat at the coils or making any noise.

It's a line voltage thermostat of some sort. John Deere got heavily into consumer products in the late 70s and my guess it's from that time period.

The cord is a 16 ga 3 conductor 16/3 the SJT is Service grade, Hard service, thermoplastic.

Typically used for fuel oil or kerosine burning torpedo heaters.

Line voltage thermostat as said. Probably for a portable heater. Not made by John Deere but that style is still produced.
