I've seen similar threads on BITOG before, but many of them are at least several years old now so I thought I would re-visit this topic and see what BITOG members think.

In your opinion, regardless of price, what is the best conventional 5W-20?

Personally I would have to say PYB due to its stout additive pack, but let's hear your opinions!

How much room does a conventional 5W-20 have for shearing ? I would say none at all.

At least with a conventional 5w30, you're at a 5W-20 when is shears.

I agree with the PYB as well.
I'd be running it in my parents Focus if it wasn't for the stock of Valvoline Synthetic Blend that I got at Autozone last year for $1 @ qt.

Some conventionals do well with things like shearing, even volatility, Castrol comes to mind, not even all synthetics do as well as some conventionals I believe. If youre changing oil frequently a lot of oil issues are minimized, if taking the oil the distance get a good syn. This is my opinion from reading about it, others milage may vary.

5W20 may not even shear in the first place.

I would be hard pressed to choose between MS5K and PYB. Though PYB is touted to have a superior than most additive pack--MS5K is also equally up to the task. I would say whichever is more readily available and is on sale (though I understand price was not in your criteria).

PYB is the best, however i have little personal loyalty, and the lowest price (clearance sales) always wins.

On paper PYB appears to be in another league (comparing 5w-20 on PQIA). Stout additive package, high TBN, low NOACK %.

It's probably what I'd use if I weren't using synthetic

+1. I know price isn't a factor but making it a factor, I'd go with Mobil Super 5000 5w-20. I'm a fan of Pennzoil products but to me PYB is priced a little to high. For example 5 qt jug of PYB at walmart.com is $16.47 while MS5k is only $12.88. And with MS5k you get 5,000 miles of engine protection using only conventional. Also, it has 15% more cleaning additive then their basic conventional oil.

It better not!

It'd end up shearing down to a 5W-nothing

IMO, PYB. On paper it is the best, I've always had good results with it and less consumption compared to Motorcraft. However those are the only two I have used. It is really hard to not mention Mobil Super with price considered and the multiple UOA results 2010_FX4 posted.
