I see no issue mixing oils of the same line to make a custom formulation. Such as Mobil 1 0w-40 with the AFE 0w-20 to try and achieve a certain hths level, since we cannot attain the AFE 0w-30 through regular channels.
Or perhaps red lines 0w-40 with their 20 grade, again to achieve something that cannot be purchased.
Mixing different brands with different additive packages won't hurt anything however I don't think it's optimal.
Oil companies spend alot of money formulating oils. They employ people alot smarter than me,that figure out stuff in the realm of parts per million,so I'm not even going to attempt to fool myself into thinking I know better than them.
Sometimes I'll add an oil additive but even that has become rare.
I just take the opposite side of skyship so I can call him out.
Or I'll use a flush type product. Usually seafoam to run through the vacuum lines just so I know for sure their clean. I'll use it in the crankcase to address an issue but if their isn't a problem there is no point trying to create one.
Good oil can do alot but neglect and abuse can necessitate the need for a product other than just oil.
But back on point mixing different brands blindly isn't optimal in my opinion but I doubt it will do any real harm.
API certified oils are formulated to all be compatible. Additive clash is not possible when using an API stamped oil. Once you get out of the API realm there is the very real possibility of some brands not being compatible however I'm sure to be API certified the product has to be compatible with all other API certified oils.
