What is a good quality 20 micron filter for extended drain intervals?

it seems like all of the Chamion filters have smaller media in both cartridge size and square inches, about 1/3 less than all 3 OEM filters. I am wondering what makes the K&N higher flow, since I am sure that it shares the sames size media as the other Champion made filters

Maybe flow rate becomes a moot point, after it exceeds a certain minimum, for whatever given application

The 3 Gallons per minute is probably ok under normal operating conditions and temperatures but we know that an engine doesn't always just see normal conditions. I don't race my engines, but there are times where flooring it is required to get into traffic or to pass someone where high flow may be required. I would assume the high flow will not be utilizing the bypass valve nearly as often as the 3 Gal/minute filter. Also on cold starts, the higher flow will come out of bypass quicker or will never go into bypass as compared to the lower flow filter. I'm not using any hard facts here, just common sense reasoning to come to these conclusions. So I could be completely wrong about the benefits

The 12-16 gpm quoted by K&N is for a race car with an extremely high volume oil pump installed. The efficiency rating of 90% is done as part of the SAE 806, multiple pass filter test at a much lower flow rate of 3 gpm.

You may be able to have one or another of the above two attributes - you just can't have both at the same time in the same engine.
 
Thanks, guys. The inherent limitations of full-flow, and why some go the by-pass route.

I just got this info back from CantonMecca

Maximum flow
6.25" filter 45gpm
4.25" filter 15gpm

There doesn't seem to be much/any info around wrt at what load/rpm/flow need, various full-fulls will kick into bypass.
