Valvoline has not always been good. Synpower used to be a joke of a synthetic until they hired some new people and revamped their synthetic line up a few years ago. Their conventional oils have always been good. Synpower is a very good oil now.
What has valvoline been doing lately?

like mentioned before the used oil analysis and VOA's dont really look all that impressive but apparently it is a pretty good oil, i wonder what secret concoction they have in there.

I have spent the last 33 years working in garages and Valvoline has always seemed to be the oil of choice for the pro's,must be something to it, There claim of x amount of ase mechanics choose Valvoline appears to be true , I like there broad product line and no baloney advertising.

Their used oil analysis look great. It's the VOA's people complain about a light add pack, but as most speculate, they are using organic additives. The impressive used oil analysis seem to bare this out.

+1. It doesn't look that hot on paper (the VOA), but the used oil analysis that have been posted are very good.

I always use Valvoline and like the price an quality.

Ashland is a small oil company. They don't have the financial backing that Pennzoil, Castrol, Mobil 1 have from their parent big oil companies. The likes of Shell, Exxonmobil, BP, and Conocophillips have deep pockets.
Their Maxlife is top shelf High Mileage oil. They were one of the first to bring a 5W-40 synthetic to the market 10 years ago. You could even find it at your local Napa...cough....Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40....cough....

Interesting Valvoline is expensive where you guys are. It's 3.99/qt every day at my local O'rileys for synthetic and my Auto zone has 5qts + filter of Valvoline every month - even when running a Castrol or M1 deal.
