I've always had normal colors. When I last looked at the site a couple hours ago I had normal colors. Now the background is black and text, borders etc. are red! Where and how to do set it back to normal colors??

Did it to me, too. I had to change it at the bottom left, dark with red lettering is almost impossible to read!

suddenly it was like the red & black background with a Marine on each side … but a quick reset fixed it

Gone rogue or rouge.
You can also change the Style variation in the main menu on the right, second entry from the top. on the Preferences page. I never noticed the style chooser at the bottom of every page until it was pointed out to me.Some images were converted to webp. Some very old browsers don’t support webp
Never knew about the lower left option. Found the spot in settings and got a more tolerable mix. Not crazy about it but at least it's usable now.
