What happened to the semi synthetic oils from a few years ago? Have these oils been branded synthetic oils now? Anyone know the make up of these oils? My brother has a 2005 ford f-150 5.4 and he says the manual says to use the semi synthetic. What oils out labeled as synthetics are really semi synthetic?

"Regular" is approaching blend status. Motorcraft as mentioned above is virtually the same as tropartic, a so-labelled blend in 10w30 and lighter. That's the cheapest oil Phillips markets. Also I believe the cheapest citgo is now calling itself a blend.

Lots of the midpriced gimmick oils were and still are blends too... 4x4, high mileage. They just had to add a marketing spin to say "this is for you"...

I think Synthetics just got too cheap. With a jug of conventional at 12, and syn at 20, there isn't much need for an oil in between.

I would think it would be a 5w20 that meets fords spec for 5w20 oil. It may mention something about semi synthetic motorcraft oil in there and that may be where he is getting that he needs a bottle that says semi synthetic oil.

Trop Artic is one of the cheapest non-sale oils around here. The Orscheln chain of stores consistently has this for $1.69/qt and it has "Synthetic Blend" on the container. As of late, I've been stocking up on it and none of my motors has seized up using the stuff. (J/K. I think it's a good oil)

The small percentage of Group III/Group V/Group IV in these oils, mixed with the Group II/Group II+ has the effect of making the rest of the oil nearly as good as the true synthetic. A blend of only 10% Syn will have much better cold start properties than pure conventional.

I'll put a different potential spin on it. It got too darn expensive to have separate processes just for conventional so you just make different viscs of the same synthblend process.
