What grease gun do you use?

Years ago I got rid of my grease guns because nothing I owned had grease fittings. Now I have two tractors, implements, trailers...zerks everywhere. Bought a couple of new grease guns and they are crap. I also bought a Lick-N-Lube and it was too big to be useful to me. I'm going to check out the McNaught.
Update: I just received my new Mcnaught. Greased a few zerks this morning. It seems very nice compared to my other grease guns

I’ve got a Lincoln from Walmart about 6 or 7 years back. It wasn’t even blue like the old ones and was made in China. I expected the worst. It has however performed flawlessly for me. It spent about 3 years as the only grease gun in the car/light truck side of a dealership after the shop’s grew legs and walked out. Now it’s been on farm duty ever since.

It is odd having to buy grease though. Before anytime I took it home when planning on using the tractor, doing side work or packing trailer bearings I just made sure it was full or grabbed an extra tube from the shop supplies.

The Alemite pistol grip has been my all time favorite. I've had several cheap ones and several Lincolns and this one is the one that travels with me every day. I love the setting for pressure or volume.

The problem has always been the pressure behind the grease tube piston. I wanted to manufacture a threaded piston that moved with each handle actuation, to positively push the grease into the pump. Instead of the generally insufficient spring pressure. This way, even if there was an air pocket, the thing would self-prime. But there is little need for grease guns now.

I've got a 20 year old grease gun from Auto Zone. I use it twice a year for the rear ball joints on my Taurus.

The problem I run into is the oil slowly drips (I've got a bag with paper towel zip tied) and when it comes time to use it again, I get air pockets or dried out grease. It seems like a waste to buy an entire tube only to use it twice and throw it away.

I've been thinking about getting a mini grease gun. Or is there a better way to store a grease gun?

Make sure that you take the pressure off of the piston while it’s stored.

Try a different grease maybe?

Mine does not leak like that, although it did when I had Mobil 1 grease in there.

I’ve been using AMSOIL grease, and it doesn’t separate out into oil and carrier.

Pressure is relieved on the gun and it is Mobil 1 grease.

I had that same problem with Mobil 1 in tubes. Interestingly, the tub of Mobil 1 on my workbench has been fine for a decade. No separation. The Mobil 1 grease on my Garands (which is why the tub is there in the first place) stays intact for years.

I don’t know why it separates out in the tube, but it does, hence the switch to AMSOIL which has been great. I only grease a couple of things and it is infrequent.

I used this grease with my old grease gun and it always leaked out the bottom. I switched to a new gun mentioned above and now use this grease with no leaks anymore.

Whether it was the grease or the gun causing the leaks, I can’t say definitively but at the very least you may want to switch up your grease choice.
