What fluid for my Lowboy trailer

I have a 2007 XL brand lowboy trailer, I need hydraulic fluid suggestions

I just rebuilt all the hydraulic system, new seals in all the cylinders, new hoses, new filter. The reservoir is empty as well. Anyways the manufacturer suggestion is ISO32 hydraulic oil but I’m afraid it will have bad performance in cold weather and the hydraulics won’t work smooth. I posted a slow chart from the manufacturer also.

Now, I THINK what I took out was ATF, it was red like ATF, but I can’t confirm that’s what was in it. It is common to switch out fluids for something that works better in both hot and cold climates.

A local rep suggested ISO46 said it has better cold flow numbers.

So any suggestions? I’d like something that’s not special order. I can get the blue hydraulic fluid locally but if I blow a line on the road I need to be able to get fluid to fill it.

Why would a thicker fluid have better cold flow? If similar fluids from same company?
iso 46 is about 50% thicker than iso 32

Oh then the local dealer gave me wrong info, how does ISO32 relate to ATF? Would they function about the same?

The viscosity of ISO32 is roughly the same as 10w motor oil. It will be a bit thinner than Dexron III, at least when hot.

Both will have anti-wear additives if you buy AWS-32 type hydraulic fluid.

I would base the choice on what the manufacturer specifies. It's possible that seals in the system require one or the other type.

i would try iso 32, as far as lubricating, isnt this mainly for power transfer, what is it actually lubricating? at that point most of this oil is oil.

Its not a gear oil.

OTOH a premium syn iso 32 such as amsoil might be superior to the average bucket of fluid.
but you pay for that $300/5gal or so.

I'd try a standard iso 32 fluid and if you have issues you can always move up to a premium.

They’re calling for a multi-viscosity type product so typically that means you’re looking for something with a VI above 120. A product like Mobil DTE 10 excel 32 or Chevron Rando MV 32 is what the OEM is recommending.

I would suggest taking a look at the hydraulic fluids offered by High Performance Lubricants. They have a very complete product line and would certainly have something that would address your concerns about low temperature Performance. They are a company that us BITOGERS can call and speak with the Technical Director or company President directly to get answers to questions about their products and applications. Tractor Hydraulic Fluid is can be red and might have been what you drained. Might be a good fluid for refill.

Not familiar with Rando MV 32, might be an old name. There's HDZ 32

Don't blame you, stuff is crazy money. Maybe fine on a high dollar race car, but a huge waste on equipment when tons of quality fluids are available at reasonable prices.

When I talked to the rep a few times all I hear about is the border patrol OCI. I’m sure it has its place like you said but certainly not on this trailer.

ISO32 or 46 will work fine. I maintain several trucks with wet kits used for walking floors(much higher flow than your trailer requires) and run 46 is all of them. Also, I absolutely do NOT recommend going with a high end super expensive fluid. You will rip the hoses off or blow one long before your fluid ever "wears out". You"ll be amazed how fast you can empty the tank when one of the lines lets go.

Somehow our drivers have no problem disconnecting the glad hands but completely forget the hydraulic connections right next to them.
