Just curious as to what filter options you guys reccomend for a chevy LT4 v8. I take it theres much better than stock out there.

1 thing i noticed last time i had a k&n, it seemed i could never get an accurate reading of how much oil was in the car... is this because of the anti-drainback valve???

The K&N oil filter flows very well, so that's a good choice. Another good choice which costs less is the Carquest Premium, which is the same as NAPA Gold, this also flows well.

I'm not sure why you couldn't get an accurate reading while using the K&N though.

....Patman. Re: oil flow. Did I read somewhere on this site that the Mobil 1 oil filter generally is not one of the better choices with regards to flow? I am using Motorcraft FL1A on my 70 351C but was intending to use Mobil's M1-301 in the future. I certainly don't want any oiling issues with my motor though. Are we talking a significant reduction in flow here? Who manufactures the "Carquest Premium" and is it and the K&N easily aquired in Ontario?

Thanks.

I may be wrong here but didn't the Mobil flow as good as the Motorcraft or the Purolater in Bob's testing ...about 25% if I'm not mistaken...I think paranoina is setting in here on the Mobil filter. The Fram X2 was pretty bad if I remember correctly.

I've been using the M1-301 on our three vehicles without any concern for their quality. As to there being better filters, the OIL FILTER STUDY thread is an on-going investigation.

I am going to switch these vehicles to the BALDWIN B2-HPG for the next change and send that, along with a DONALDSON #169071 to Bob. The first, as best as I can tell, a fully 'glass media filter, the second uses that companys proprietary synthetic/cellulose media.

Terry Dyson indicates that the DONALDSON Hard Driver series of a few years back (but difficult to find), with a fully glass media may well be the best choice.

how about filters from candian tire... motomaster or whatever... crap? i usually use the delco ones they have there.

>about the K&n, i think it was just mind games. Since it has a anti-drainback valve.. i was thinking that this doesnt allow some oil to drain back down into the pan for an accurate reading... ??

No kidding.

Take one UOA, mix it with a bunch of speculation and viola!!! Now we have a filter that's proven to be sub-standard because it doesn't flow well.

You won't hear me say that the Mobil One filters are bad. They're expensive. And if a comparably priced, lower-priced or higher priced filter does a better job then it would be my preference.

As to what constitutes better is up to investigation and debate at this time, I'll leave that to others. We've seen, thus far, some evidence of filter performance. We'll see more.
I'm willing to experiment a little as are some others.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this or another high quality filter, especially as it is easily found. For the Donaldson and Baldwin pieces I have to go over to Robertson Fleet Service and another yet-to-be-determined supplier. Mobil One I can find at Autozone. Same with boutique oils.

As I don't change the oil but annually in two of three cars it isn't a hassle. The third vehicle is getting oil changes at 6-7500 miles or six weeks and were it the only car I wouldn't bother with "boutique" filters.
