I believe you are right. When I started to drive (1964-65) you could get Zerone antifreeze or Zerex -- these from DuPont. I used both in my old Dodge.
The Zerone was methanol. it evaporates at a lower temperature than water, and you used a lower temp thermostat.
The Zerex was ethylene glycol and also known as "permanent antifreeze" meaning the water would preferentially boil off and the antifreeze remain.
An advantage of the methanol was you can depress the freezing point lower with a larger percentage of antifreeze -- all the way to the freezing point of the alcohol at some nasty below zero value not found in nature. As opposed to the ethylene glycol which if not mixed with water will freeze near the freezing point of water.
