what do you put on a hook for catfish

They are garbage eaters and sniff food in the mud. Chunks of dead fish with the guts hanging, pieces of chicken or chicken guts/livers, bacon. Nightcrawler on the bottom can work but tend to catch other stuff.

LeakySeals is right, catfish seem to like anything kinda rotten and smelly. Many fishermen have their own favorite "Recipe," but IIRC catfish wont eat catfish flesh. Or maybe that was just channel cats...

I have seen kernels of corn used with some success, too.

Worms or chicken liver.

Put it on a circle hook with a 1-2 oz. sinker.

I'll be trying for some when I go Walleye fishing this weekend.

Super catfishing bait = chicken livers.

The big trick? Sewing thread! Hook the liver as best you can then wrap it in sewing thread to hold it together!

Good eatin'!

In a good bait store, you can also buy dough ball.....a stinkyt cheese like product that you form on the hook.

My great grandfather had no sense of smell and would let chicken livers and gizzards "ferment" a few days in a tin can before using for bait.

I use cut shad, Israeli carp, bluegill, night crawlers and mud leaches, depending on what they are biting on.

Depends on the type of catfish. Blue, flathead and mud cats are the bottom feeders and hunt by smell, so chicken guts is always good. The sport end of the line, as in Channel Cat are mid feeders so I go with large minnows what have been cut so some blood leaks. Channel Cats are considered by many as the best eating fish available. Yummy
