What do you know about the Mazda 2?

I’m going to look at it tomorrow along with a 2010 Fit with 125k for $4500.

One of the reasons I’ve never had a Mazda is they have an absolutely terrible reputation for disintegrating on our salty roads. It appears to be a well deserved reputation cause I’m always seeming horrendously rusted Mazdas all over the place.

Yeah, we had an '06 Mazda3 that almost disintegrated.

However, I think that Mazda started doing a better job with rust control in their vehicles after ~2009-10. You may want to consider KROWN on any vehicle if you haven't already.

So, the FIT is one year older, more than double the km and $1000 more. Hmmm, typical!

Best of luck to you and I certainly hope you pick a winner. (y)

EDIT:
IDK if you saw this young man and his 5spd Mazda2 and he also has a 6mo update. He does a nice job with video and the cars specs.

I’m in the market for a cheap and simple little hatchback and I’ve come across a 2011 Mazda 2 that seems to fit the bill. It’s a 5 speed with only 54k kms on it. The old couple is asking $3500 CAD for it. In the current inflated used vehicle market this seems like a great deal. The problem is I don’t really know a whole lot about these cars and there doesn’t seem to be near as much info out there as there is about the yaris, fit, versa, etc. I like that it has a very low tech engine that should run forever.

Anyone have any experience with the 2? Worth considering or should I pay much more for a similar Fit or Yaris?
I had leased the scion ia very similar vehicle power train and chassis definitely was a solid little car.

Had a family member with one and loved it until it got flooded recently but said that since new it was bulletproof reliable and a simple vehicle. Just check to see its been beaten and spit on or take it to a shop and have them upskirt her and check for something dirty in between before you go in.

Yep I watched that lad’s videos. There’s even some videos of people doing auto cross with them. Seems to be well regarded in terms of handling.

The Fit is a good price if they’ve done the plugs, valve check and serpentine belt. Coolant and brake fluid change should also be done.

If it matters, Honda sold Chinese Fits in Canada around that time for a few years until the Mexican factory went live. They weren't sold in the US.

If the Mazda isn't rusty, it is the better deal. $1000 can buy you lots of Krown.

The only car worse than the Mazda 2. There is not any redeeming qualities about a Fit. Poor ride, poor highway car, poor everything.

Some '09 > '13 FITs have potential issues with loosening spark plugs and bad coil packs , especially as the miles go up .

IIRC the reason you can't find much on the net about them, is because they were only available for the Canadian market...though I could be wrong.
Aside from that, they are wonderfully simple and with basic maintenance you should be able to get many years of trouble-free driving from it.
They were briefly sold in the US and then badge engineered as the Scion iA and then the Toyota Yaris iA for a while, but I don't know when they were no longer offered here.

No personal experience, but they seem to get decent reviews. Bottom line, try it and if you like it, buy it.

The engine of the Scion Ia ( Mazda 2 ) has the SKYACTIV technology , not sure about '11 > '14 . Did discover this about the SKYACTIV 1.5 Liter , https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=98 . This is the '21 Mazda 2 with SKYACTIV-G from Australia , https://www.mazda.com.au/cars/mazda2/ .

I wasn’t sure when the SkyActiv went into the 2’s as Mazda kind of did that progressively by model over a few years. It will definitely have the SkyActiv badge on it if it is.

Both versions of that 1.5 were good motors.

This car has an old tech iron block Z series engine similar to the old protege. Should be good for longevity if nothing else.

You look to be right . If so , should be good bet on longevity , depending its maintenance . The 1.3 Ltr. of the MAZDA 1 and FORD Festiva could take a beating from neglect and hard driving habits . Seen it in person . Sold from '88 > '93 . We had the 90 (?) with 3 speed auto and '93 with 5 speed manual . Amazing amount of headroom and legroom for front an back . Could fold rear seat in upright position close to back of the front seats . Placed large seats and other items in it . Miss it . :(

Before you purchase the Mazda2 be sure to take it for a test drive. Pay particularly close attention to the steering, if you hear any rattles in the front end or feel any looseness in the steering, the steering rack will need to be replaced, a $1300 to $1500 repair. This is a VERY common problem, there is a TSB on it. The biggest problem that I see with this repair is that the new rack will also go bad, so even if the rack has already been replaced, you will need to do it again at some point.
