What do you do with your old oil?

I prefer to dump mine on baby seals.

Actually Advance or Autozone gets mine, except usually thier barrels are full when I go there to drop it off.

because of this, I am building quite a collection of used oil right now.

Maybe my mpg was from the engine loosening up... but 28.3mpg is pretty **** good for a car the EPA says is supposed to get 27mpg highway

It is toxic to mammals if you drink even a small quantity, but as far as I know, breaks down pretty quickly in the environment such as a sewage treatment plant

I drop my oil off at a local garage. He burns it year round to heat the garage. He uses just used oil. He claims he goes through more filters this way but it is still much cheaper then buying fuel oil!

If I change it at my Pops it goes to a guy he knows that heats his garage with a used oil heater.

Murray's auto parts. They let me dump it in myself so I don't have to wait for them.

In winter, I use it start the fire. To he!! with newspaper. This stuff starts the fireplace up quick. In the summer, it goes to the local Quicky lube. I just love the look on their faces when they realize I took business away from them because they use to do it until I caught them dumping cheap-o QS in my cars when I brought in M1. BUSTED.

Here in San Francisco I bring them to the local Kragen. Then dump it in their tank. They don't take my container though, so I usually reuse them and recycle the new oil container. But like others said, they are always full.

One of my friend works at a company that makes CV boot, he claims they buy lots of used oil as raw material, hence their quality is not that good.

We have a monthly bring your used oil and wrestle with the girls contest at one of the local mud wrestling hangouts, which by the way you can particpate for free with an oil donation. I bring Mobil 1. The Swedish twins love it.

Seriously, I keep them in gasoline jugs in the garage. Then on the first Saturday of each month, I take them to the local recycling area. This is the designated day for oil/solvents/paint disposal.

Given in a former life I was engineer working with EPA SuperFund sites, a few were "oil recyclers" where drums were buried or left onsite, its nice to hear these good things.

Yeah, I'm glad people are recycling. I'm a little suprised at all the burning, though. Someone who knows anything about motor oil knows the compounds and heavy metals that are suspended in used oil. Without processing the used oil, those things are going to be released into the air... this will almost certainly cause some kind of long-term health issues if inhaled on a daily/weekly basis.

I just moved from a place that had four recyclers within 4 miles, to a place where according to online resources, I'm going to need to drive a little farther to recycle.

QUESTION ON RECYCLING TRANNY FLUID: A few places around here say they will only take a quart of transmission fluid/month. Is that typical? I wonder how much I'm going to have left over when I replace my manual and rear diff with RP this spring...

I always give high praises to Valvoline oil change places. Over the years they have consistently taken in used oil from the DIYers in the area as a community service. It's the most hassle-free way for me to dispose used motor oil, trans fluid, hydraulic fluid, and oil filters.

For the record, I called the Detroit water and sewerage dept. They said it is OK to dump antifreeze down the sink, but it should be diluted. I took that to mean that you should run the water while pouring. Of course this only applies to the Detroit area with the assumption that I'm only a private resident who isn't going to do this often.

Gas stations locally are designated as locations to take back your old oil. The Exxon station near me has a sign designating that they will take in the old oil so I take mine there. They have a large drum and I pour it in there.

I donate all my old oil and ATF to the local Autozone. They have one of those large square tanks in the back that looks like it could hold around 1000 gallons.

Our local MUD said it was fine to put antifreeze down the drain, so down the toilet it goes
