I refuse to buy a filter cutter. All my filters would get cut open, and my stash depleted.

It's important to cut open several new filters of each type to check for quality control between each filter. So I would say you buy 10 of each filter type, cut open 9 to verify their quality control and if the nine all are of high quality then you are good to go using the 10th.
