What Causes Vibration ??

Always wondered, the 95 Camry in my sig was inherited. I have it in tip top shape. From day 1 when in drive, foot on brake, there are vibrations felt through the steering wheel. Front axles replaced at 68k when I git it. Trans has had like 5 dumps over 35k miles. Vibrations are very noticeable.

The instance the gas pedal is engaged it's smooth as silk....even my buddy mechanic jokes and call its a lexus it runs so smooth. That's smooth from instance you give it gas to 100mph. So, what is it that causes the vibrations at standstill?

Am I missing something???

It sounds like you're talking about a vibration from the engine when at idle, is that correct? Could be a lot of things. Mounts, misfire at idle, etc.

4 cylinder? Old motor mounts and the inevitable vibrations that all 4-cylinder engines have at low speed can cause pretty noticeable buzzing and vibration of the steering wheel.

That's assuming its nothing egregious like bad plugs, blown head gasket, etc. that causes serious shaking.

If vibrations are occurring with the car not moving, probably engine mounts.

If vibrations are only when car is moving and frequency increases with speed, probably rotors or axles. Who made the replaced axles?

it could be anything: from old motor+ trans mounts to rack-n-pinion mounts (rubber) to even IAC dirty or even slight imbalance in terms of compression on all 4 cylinders (rare, but happened before).

of course: there's always the other possibility such as ignition problem, etc. (like what 440Magnum sez)

Also: you have to realise that most 4cyl camry or corolla, their idle vibration tends to be worse than, say most HOnda 4cyls (incl my fit), even though some of these engines came with counterbalance shaft already (not much difference during idling).

I changed plugs, wires, cap, fuel filter, all-in-one shocks all around, front axles, trand pan/filter drops many times, fuel filter, pcv, 2 of the 3 oil seals, belt, drive belt, power steering belt, water pump, thermo, etc....

With the engine running, open the hood, and with your foot on the brake, shift the car back and forth between Drive and Reverse. Watch if the engine bounces badly when you do this. This will show bad engine mounts.

Looks like you changed everything except the mounts. Inspect front and rear mounts, they may be hydraulic in your Camry.

Is it like an occasionally stumbling idle, like dirty injectors? [censored] building up on valves and inside the cylinders? You might have a peek with a borescope...

It's motor mounts. My friend it doing them for me today. I'll post back with end results. Said they are easy on this car...except the rear mount is a PITA.

Had 3 of the 4 motor mounts replaced. She is still vibrating, even worse now. All 3 that were changed out were shot. The 4th and final mount is on backorder. This is the one by the trans. Can't wait to get it replaced.

Ok, had 4 motor mounts replaced now. The vibration is still there. All the mounts were shot no doubt about that. The vibration is much reduced now but it is still there. In drive with foot on brake, complete stop; vibrated the steering wheel. Maybe there is another mount? Possible there is a trans mount on top of the 4 motor mounts?

Any ideas?

I checked it out on the drive home. Vibrates through the steering wheel in P and Reverse but not in N.

The idle settles down when a little warm to around 800 RMP. Should it be higher?

800 rpm idle my or may not be too high to begin with. Has it always been at 800 rpm???

Is there a steering rack/shaft damper in your Camry???

I've done this but, it's not the most recomemded fix as the Idle can sometimes change/fluxuate and the vibes may be felt at other rpm's. See below:

1) While you're in the idling car, in gear w/foot on brake...have your buddy raise the idle(the tiniest amount that gets rid of the viberation) to simulate your exact condition.

2) Does the idle get worst with the Read Defogger or A/C on? You may want those accessories on while the idle is raised.

Older Honda Accords had this vibe worst than most other cars(that I've experienced) and there were some fixes but, those fixes weren't 100% cures for all Accords.

I had one of these Accords and changed 3 motor mounts, 1 transmission mount and installed a steering damper and it didn't fix anything!!! I reised the Idle to the most happy medium that I could find and still only bearly acceptable...IDK!

In the cold/winter time, the vibe was at it's worst!
