I am in the parts bussiness. one of my employees put 2 quarts of oil in a 1994 dodge intrepid 3.5l at their request. all of the sudden the car develops a valve cover leak and the shop in town told them it was from being 2 qts over full. I cannot think of any reason the extra oil would cause a leak, whats your thought? car also has over 200k on it!

If two quarts were added to an already full engine, oil could definitely come out of the valve cover gaskets, especially on a high mileage vehicle where there is almost certainly already some seepage from the gaskets.

I mean no offense by this, but the fact that your employee made no attempt to check the dipstick before or after the oil was added is appalling. Negligence overcame such a simple step that could have prevented the leak.

Slightly off-topic but my mom had some major engine work done, requiring them to change the oil (otherwise I would've done it to make sure it was done right!) and they overfilled it by a quart. The car requires 4.5 quarts and they put in 5, and i'm assuming didn't let it drain very long because the dipstick shows one quart overfilled. I'm having her take it back there tomorrow to fix it for her. It's sad that a Chevy dealership doesn't even know how much their own cars take.

wouldn't all the extra oil be in the oil pan? if the oiling system had the ability to pump the extra oil to the top of the engine it would pump the pan dry? so if extra oil caused the leak please help me understand how. because I would love to cove the $300 bill but I fail to understand how this caused an oil leak.

which wont cause any problems.
