So after days of looking around on Amazon at a couple of oil deals I pulled the trigger on a 5 quart jug of Valvoline Syn Power SN GF-5 0w20. They are marked down to $22.67 (same as the deal going on at Walmart now), on top of that I got free shipping and was able to use my rewards points making the out the door cost $12.93. Pretty happy with that price! If not for the deal, I would have most likely used another oil. I dont know much about Valvoline, other than their Max Life line up. I do know that the add pack on the Syn Power is not very conventional, using NO Moly and NO Boron. Have any of you used this oil? Im not worried about it holding up as it will be used for 5-6 months in my short tripper Accord. No doubt my favorite oil is TGMO 0w20, the high VI and great add pack make it a perfect match for my car...but like most BITOGer's I like trying new oils...and I am always looking for a good deal, I mean come one $12 for a full synthetic 0w20? Cant pass that up. So what are your thoughts on this oil?

There are some used oil analysis of this oil in that forum.
Take a look.
The API SN formulation of Synpower appears to hold up very well in service. Earlier formulations had limited TBN retention.
Valvoline oils usually show very low wear metals levels in used oil analysis, for what that's worth.
I'd use the oil without thinking twice.

You could also do the Pennzoil Platinum 0w20 with FRN rewards deal

comes out to being 25.17+tax -20$ in free gas.

just have to check the bottles and make sure they weren't opened for thieving scumbags to photo the underlid code.

I went to 7 walmarts over a 2 week period

3 didnt carry 0w20 pp in 5qt jug and the other 4 were hammered by the lid photoing scumbags.

Valvoline SynPower 0w20 may be my Winter oil when I change next Fall. I've used the 5W20 version in my previous Ford trucks and was happy with the "perceived" performance (i.e. it "sounded good" in my old 5.4L)

Synpower 0w20 has been in my taurus for seven months and about 4k miles. It is still on the full mark of the dipstick. Since putting the synpower in, the car has averaged 24.002 mpg in rural two lane driving.

For comparison; I bought the car with 23,900 and promptly put in Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w20. Over the 6,700 miles it was in the car, I averaged 23.6 with over 1k miles of interstate driving added to the usual rural driving. The Quaker State Ultimate Durability made the engine ultra quiet at my typical engine speeds of 1,200-1,700 rpm. However, that "ultra smooth" was gone by the 3k mark in the oci.

While using the synpower, the engine never had that amazingly quiet, smooth sound but it sounds pretty cool to me. The engine has a neat "growl" to it, for lack of a better description. The car seems a little more peppy with the synpower in it, too. I know...I know...I'm not supposed to be able to notice any such thing!

That's all I can say so far. Will do a used oil analysis as I approach one year on the oil and report here with the results.

Thanks for the info, hope it does not make my engine too noisy. Honda's are not known for quiet engines to begin with.

It's been in my wife's Honda Odyssey for almost 3 months now (about 2,500 miles). It hasn't used any oil so far. Seems quiet enough. She has a tough commute so I don't think I'll change it in August.

The engine calls for 5w20, but I decided to try 0w20. I ran 5w20 since new (100% Mobil syn), and the one UOA I did was mediocre.

I like it and will continue to use it, have been using Synpower for years.

Ran good in the Subaru and the Honda. Good fuel mileage, Cleaned up varnish Quaker State Ultimate Durability left in the fill hole, Good power - though some noise and not the greatest cold weather warmup/crank in the Honda. The new oil looked closer to CLEAR in color than anything else ive poured in - I think this is a VERY advanced animal over their 5w20 offering.
I am on PU and PP now being curious how a pure iso-paraffin oil runs - im still in a tough add pack changeover from the Valvoline surprisingly!
WIth the SOPUS stuff LTA Fuel mileage is still down on both cars 1.5-2mpg over early spring. I did go with the lower VI 5w20 for summer service though. Engines are VERY quiet on the Pennzoil Platinum or Pennzoil Ultra. Ive learned to give a LL real syn oil 1-2k miles before it settles in for the long haul.
