I recently picked up a 2001 Honda Prelude. Filter looks relatively clean in person, but I have no idea whether it's OEM or whatever aftermarket brand possible. White side is atmosphere, green side is manifold. Any thoughts?
Definitely looks like an OEM filter. The giveaway (to me) is the media. The woven fiberglass media screams OE. I've never seen an aftermarket (Fram, Puro, Wix) filter with that woven glass media. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but when I see one, it's always been an OE-spec, from Toyo Roki, Denso, etc.
I guess my next question is how well do Toyo Roki air filters perform? I'd guess ok since their oil filters are held in high regard.
Anyone know how long Honda has used this filter material? My concern is that the Prelude air filter has had the same part number since the 4th gen Prelude, 1992! Usually when they make any changes to a part, the part number gets changed. I certainly don't want 19 year filter technology, but if the S2000 uses the same material it's possible Toyo Roki could've changed media without Honda changing the p/n.

Any other filter you buy (paper) is using 50 year old filter technology. Seriously, woven fiber batting like you have there seems to be the preferred filtering media these days, at least with Japanese makes. Both of my Toyotas and my Acura's OEM filters use that type of media. But for all three, if you go buy a Purolator or Fram, they use the standard pleated paper media. All of my Domestic makes have used the standard pleated paper, but the newest Domestic I've owned was a 2007 Chrysler, so I don't know if brand new models are starting to come out with the woven fiber.
