My friend who is looking for a car. Found a 2000 jeep Cherokee classic. 4x4 4 door 120k new tires in good shape for 6900 its at a car lot . Just wondering what you think a fair offer would be and if they have any issues I should know about its got the 4.0 I knowbthey are pretty good any thoughts is appreciated . Thanks all

The 2000 and 2001 are the years that crack the head on the valvespring side. Not all do it but it is pretty common on the Jeep boards.
It was 5995 sorry for the mistake. Why do the heads crack? Being cast iron I guess that's not real common . Please inform me of that
I miss mine! I had a fully loaded 2000 XJ Cherokee Limited with the 4.0L, leather, etc and the good transfer case with part time and full time 4x4 modes. It was in mint condition with only 80k when I sold it. I kick myself.

Jeep Cherokees are becoming a cult classic, and harder to find ones that haven't been lifted and made into off roaders. Very durable and that engine is great for off roading. Don't know much about the head issue, but everyone that I know that still has one loves them. I wish I still had mine, but it has been several years since I sold it. The 6 cyl Grand Cherokees are somewhat rare but are relatively cheap and are a sleeper IMO for a cheaper 4X4.
I like them overall. Just a good, basic, mostly reliable 4x4 with a proper suspension setup. They aren't without their Jeep quirks though.
My one of my friends had a 2000 Cherokee 4x4 Sport 4-door. It had 145K or so miles on it when he sold it. A previous owner had totalled it in a front end collision, but it was repaired fairly well. The engine and transmission always worked great, but it had a CEL on for a long time for some sort of evap system issue. I think it was the charcoal canister. It would screech when you turned the a/c on too. The suspension knocked and it was rattly, but it had been wrecked.
My parents had a 1985 2.5L I4 4x4 with a manual transmission. They owned it from new up to around 160K miles. At around 115K miles it started needing fairly regular repairs, most of them water pumps. It wasn't problem free, but it didn't need any internal repairs to the engine, transmission, or drive system. I don't remember it breaking down either. It was totalled in the early 1990s shortly after my parents traded it in.
I think Cherokees have very solid engines and drivetrains, but you usually get to experience the Jeep thing with nickel and dime type stuff. They are good reliable transportation though and very capable.

I think you have the Grand Cherokee (ZJ,WJ,WK body)mixed up with the Standard Cherokee (XJ body). I've never sween a 4 cyl GC and none of my radiator books show that option.

I had a 99 back in 2007 that I got at auction from my work. (I was the only bidder.
) With 160k I offered it up at $2900 and it sold for a little less than that in about a week. It was in pristine shape, being used mostly on the turnpike. Was the "stripped" model without even a temperature gauge on the dash. But the AC was frigid! I sold it to a guy up the hill from me and still see him driving around in it.
They're good trucks. A little cramped in the back seat. Mine rode on 215/70/15 street tires, signs of a gentle life.
