This house is in my hood. This is a late 60s era tract home that has had a decent spit and polish. The one across the street which hasn't been updated much is going for $1.41M and needs probably 300-400 to bring it up to code. One that is the same model as mine sold for $2.5M a few years ago after an extensive remodel. Still blows me away.
 
Where I live it's the property that has value not the home. Tear-downs are a common occurrence here. Some as little as a few years old are leveled and rebuilt.

A lot of savvy buyers will leave one wall standing, build around it, tear down the wall and add to new existing ones. The permits are then much quicker and cheaper because it's considered a remodel.
 
The run-up is crazy. I remember feeling a bit miffed while watching the market climb before I could get in, back in the early 2000's.
 
Santa Barbara is a nice place to live. Perfect weather ain't cheap ya know...
Sounds like you've experienced significant appreciation; good for you! Maybe not the buyers, at least in the short term.
When we bought in our hood, it took all I had to get in. But it has worked out well; I will leave here in a box, as they say...

My wife was headhunted to work for the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica and we took a mini vacation in LA looking at houses and almost bought a home in the LA Eagle Rock neighborhood, but a last minute raise from her job which she's still at today changed her mind.

Beautiful state and the difference in temps on the coast vs 30 miles inland can be far different.

I am a bit spoiled. My grandparents bought the house I am in back in 1968 for what they thought was an obscene $33K. They had moved out from Cocoa Beach where they and my mom worked for Boeing on the Saturn V. They moved out to work for Unexcelled Inc under the Aero Spacelines company producing the Guppy. They never thought they would be here for more than a few years. Well my mom worked for Raytheon for about 43 years and here we are still here.

One of the more annoying parts of my neighborhood are some of the new people that live here who spend too much who look down on those of us that have lived here forever. I will be working on one of the vehicles and hear parents tell their kids to go to school so they don't have to work on their own cars. Completely ignoring me having probably the equivalent of 4 years at a UC tuition worth of tools so I can enjoy my hobby without having to borrow anything.

People here are complaining it is hot. FWIW we are at 64% humidity right now and all I hear from customers is how humid and uncomfortable it is. Solvang is just over the mountains. Going there tonight for dinner which is always nice.

300-400k? you could demolish and rebuild for that price :unsure:
