Brand - unknown investigating still. Had a spare come with the house.

This is about 2 years of use from a family of 2 that entertains so no clue about water volume.

It was pretty consumed but did not collapse. There was noticeable change in household flow after change so it wasn't restricting much.

I think I'll swap out in a year next time.

There are now 3 filters on a row - 20 micron paper, PH adjust, and carbon -before the new softener system.

Actually looks pretty good for being two years old. Filters, dependent on the water (and what's in the water), often turn black after sitting in the cartridge after just a few months.

Based on what I see and the amount of time your filter has been in place, your well water is better than many others before the water hits the filter.

My friend has the clear filter housing where you can see the build up. He winds up changing it every six months based on appearance. His well operates at low pressure anyway, showers are a joke.. So when there's any buildup at all, its immediately noticeable.

Water filters should be changed when the manufacturer recommends it ,not on how they look.
Once a filter absorbs all the impurities it can hold it then sheds them back into the system creating more, a lot more.

That sounds sort of generic. I can see that for a carbon filter, but on a sediment filter.. they plug.. there is no absorbing etc.
Also for sediment it varies widely based on use, and well.

mine would look like that after a week or so...

Im pretty pleased with what I see in general.

On the manufacturers instructions - If I knew the manufacturer and what the recommendation was Id go with that.

What you have there is a dirt and sediment filter. It does not absorb anything. It just traps. Change whenever you notice a drop in water flow/pressure.

Definitely don't have a lot of iron in your water, mine come out jet black after a month or two.

I didn't believe it absorbed anything.

What I meant to say above is that there was no noticeable pressure difference after changing it, so it wasn't yet impeding flow.

The carbon canister downstream absorbs a limited amount of VOC's as does the calcite filter and water softener.

Almost none - which is very different from my midwest well experience where we always contended with iron.
