I have a weed eater GTI 15T that is about 10 years old and has been in the shed for about 3 years without being started. Needless to say, it didn't start. I took the carb off, cleaned it up as best I could, did not have new gaskets, put in new spark plug, new gas/oil and it started but will only run when the choke is 1/2 on. If I turn the choke off, the engine revs up to speed but then shuts off like it runs out of gas. I am able to use it on 1/2 choke but not running at full speed and also I just want to understand what is up with it. any thoughts?

Shannow is probably right, but I'm going to give you something else to look for based on my experience last year.
I had a similar problem with a leaf blower which drove me nuts. After ripping everything apart, I found that mud wasps built a nest in the muffler. It was filled with mud and dead embryos. Once I cleaned it out, the engine ran fine.

Don't do it man! Especially if you like tinkering with old equipment. I have a Weed Eater 15GTi myself, and it's such a little horse! It always starts on the 2nd pull and runs strong. It sounds like your carb does need a rebuild. Most any equipment will have problems after setting like that for years.
Hmm it has to be something else in some cases. I have a homelite that I bought new last year and it has done that since new. Why didn't i take it back? good question. It's too late now.
It will seemingly run at full speed with the choke on though. W/o choke I can't go full throttle it bogs down and sometimes will die.
I have an old Homelite that won't run right, leaks gas and is just worn out. I think I'll see how long it will run on plain gas just for fun.
Also make sure there are no holes, cracks, or loose connections in the fuel line. Check that the fuel cap can "breathe".
Check the two screws that hold the carb on for tightness.
What about running some fuel cleaner through it - something like Sea Foam. I have had one or two old, gunky two cyclers respond to that.

Jason, it sounds like a simple carburetor adjustment. Any engine can run wrong with the mixture screws mis-adjusted. I believe they say to turn the screws in all the way and then back them out 1.5 turns, as a starting point.
pull the muffler and check the exhaust port for carbon buildup that can restrict the exhaust. It could be a "mousenest" too.
Use a hardwood stick to scrape the carbon away and make sure the piston is covering the port when you scrape.

well, I found a carb kit and rebuilt the carb. I must have done something wrong because now the machine starts, revs up for a few seconds and then dies. Last time it ran but needed to be on 1/2 choke. It seemed like a fuel problem, I thought at first too little fuel causing it to die when it revs up. I checked the fuel line, no cracks, looked at the fuel filter, seemed OK and fuel did run by gravity. In the interim before replacing the fuel filter I took out the filter element thinking that it might be restricting the gas flow. After one of the times that it died I took out the spark plug and it was fouled, so maybe too much fuel? I will check for carbon buildup at the exhaust. Anyway, still working on it and hope to get those weeds before summer is over.
