So much this. It snows in Colorado in the winter. Every winter. And yet the media can't help but report as if it's unprecedented each time it happens.
Fortunetely the humidity was only 79% . Really ?
It's been like that for years here. I don't even bother to check the weather in the winter. They over predict and blow everything so out of proportion that it's not worth my time.
Real question. Can't the British just go to whatever store and buy a little window ac like we can. And if their windows are somehow not big enough or can't handle the weight for some reason then a portable ac that just needs a duct sticking out shouldn't be an issue right?
Even in poor countries like Mexico with households that make <10k usd in gdp per capita will still buy little window ac's. You're considered fancy if you have a mini split on the wall and if you have a central system you're considered very well to do even if they're just standard here in the US.

Here's another common weather claim - "Today's daytime high broke a 112 year record".

I'd like some of that heat. 25 miles inland is warm but here at the coast I'm wearing at least a vest because it's been quite windy and we barely reach 65°F. Along the coast, it's overcast half of the time with the marine layer acting as an air conditioning. With El Niño having come to an end our Pacific coastal waters haven't had a chance to warm up yet. I'm still wearing my wetsuit rather than my trisuit.
Outliers, spikes vs averages, and trends.
I just hate the way they predict and sensationalize the weather any more. A big rainstorm is now referred to as a bomb. They predict 40 mph dangerous winds and my weather station doesn't see anything over 15. I refuse to look at the Weather Channel because of their agenda.

No, I consider it nice comfortable weather. 34C (93.2F) which we are supposed to get on Tuesday/Wednesday will be what I consider rather hot (but not unusual).

The radar colors have all gone up a notch. We had white radar echos go over us the other night and it was a heavy rain but I have seen a lot heavier. Could still see houses 500 ft away. Different apps also are different thresholds for the colors.
It's not that simple. We all know that large cities have warmer temps because of building and population density. Given that, is it fair to compare temps of a modern big city when that 112 year old record was set when the city was comprised of a bunch of single story wooden shacks?
The trends we see today are rife with inconsistencies, especially when we're talking a degree or two.

As an almost lifetime long resident of Los Gatos, Los Gatos has some of the finest weather on the planet. Additionally, Los Gatos itself is beautiful, all of it. Vasona Park during Christmas is spectacular.

At any rate, it seems like you are out on a frequent basis, driving all up and down the coast. Me too, road trips are one of my favorite things to do.

After hitting Costco, drove through downtown on the way home. Saw 2 '63 Corvette convertibles, one was a well done restomod, not overstated. The other looked factory. And the star of the day, a perfect white '67 Goat convertible with the top down. OMG.

Back in my day when I was venturing out on my bicycles as a 10 to 13 year old, Wedgewood and the entire area was grassland with shanty town chicken farms where Monte Sereno is now.
I may not live there anymore but I'll always have a spot in my heart for Los Gatos.
