So....I have only run two synthetics in the time I've owned cars and maintained them. The first was Valvoline SynPower 10w30 in a '98 Blazer, the second was Rotella T6 5W-40 in the same vehicle. I'm considering a synthetic for the next oil change in my Dakota with a 4.7. I've considered Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic 5w30, but availability has knocked it off the list. I'm thinking of trying the new P4, Mobil Super Syn, or Havoline syn, all in 5w30 grade. I've also considered Delo XLE 10w30 Syn Blend, but I want to keep with the recommended grade. Any other suggestions? I don't want to run any extended drain type oils as I don't do extended drains.

If you don't do extended drains, then Pennzoil Conventional is all you need.
I'd use whichever 5w30 is on sale. Plenty of good choices.

I agree, but it's a "want to" situation, not an "all you need" situation. All I need is the same Quaker State Conventional I have in the crankcase now, I just want to try a synthetic. I know realistically I won't really notice anything, it's just a project. I figured as cheap as you can score some syns, why not try a few?
I didn't mention wanting to use a 40W....
On second thought, I would like to try Mobil Super 5000. I've never used anything produced by XOM.

Mobil Super 5000 is a great oil. It will perform as well as many off the shelf "synthetics".
When I had my Saturn ION, Havoline Syn worked best.
Back then, I couldn't always find it, unfortunately.

How about Super Tech Synthetic? For an experiment and not looking for extended drains it makes sense. I got great used oil analysis out of this oil (5w30) at a 5000 mile distance. Plus it is readily available.

I think that I have(for the next few days at least) decided it will be Havoline Synthetic or Mobil Super 5000 conventional, with a Mopar filter.
I ended up taking advantage of the AAP "Hot Deal", getting 5 quarts of Mobil Super 5000 for 15.00 and a sixth for regular price. I thought walking out with oil in hand for 19.98 was a pretty decent deal. Probably going to pair it with either a NAPA Gold, Mopar, or Bosch Premium filter later on.
