Well, as the title says I am considering adding Auto-rx to my T56 6 speed transmission in my 99 Trans Am. Am I wasting my time or could my transmission with 77K miles benefit from this? The standard fill is Dexron III 4 qts and I use dino dex non syn only. I was thinking maybe it might smooth up the shifting a bit.

Also, what would be the best non syn fluid to use in my tranny?

I think any transmission with greater than 30,000 miles could potentially benefit.

As for non-synth, you could use our AutoGlide Dexron III/Mercon or Schaeffer's #204S.

I would recommend doing another change at not less than 30,000 miles from now (at about 100,000).

I'm using Ford Mercon V in my Camaro. It's smooth at low rpms but when I drive the crap out of the car, the shifter gets balky or notchy. Probably just worn blocking rings, from mileage (156k).

I've pulled some high mileage (100-180k) manual trannies apart and didn't see any buildup/crud/varnish.....that would need cleaning.
The only tranny that I saw that had serious issues was "water-logged".

Try a manual tranny fluid or synchromesh fluid to see if that helps 'smooth up the shifting'.

It could also be the fluid shearing at high temps.

Also for high mileage trannys, if your vehicle for example normally specs an ATF, use the next higher viscosity fluid such as say a synchromesh lube to "fill" the voids.

I tried running Royal Purple Synchromax for 10K miles and didn't notice any difference vs. running dino Dex III. Just wondering if I am wasting 4oz. or Auto-rx for nothing.

I've been around for rebuild of T56's and have done my own once after breaking a syncho at the track. They all were spotless inside. I called Tremec after the incident and they recommended Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF for the T56. They specifically told me not use Redline Synthetic D4 ATF in the tranny. Something about at high rpms the slipperyness of the oil will keep the synchros from engaging and a tranny failure will occur. Ironic thing is when my tranny went south what did I have in? None other than RL D4ATF. It's been a year and I am pleased with the performance of the M1 ATF.

I have heard more than one account of the M1 ATF providing very poor shift feel, as in hard to shift, balky, etc. But if if works for you, awesome.

Waste of time. If you pulled that trans apart right now it will be squeaky clean inside just like the guy above said. I've never seen a "dirty" T56. Busted yes, dirty no. The "best" fluid to use in this trans is the GM stuff.
