Sounds like someone returned a nice-sized stash of old Havoline to the store. Wal*Mart takes back items they sell without a receipt. The Meijer chain of stores has lost my weekly business because they won't.
Walmart stocking Havoline SJ oil?!?

Whether Honda considers "SJ" good enough isn't really the issue. The "GF" series of oil specifications are a joint effort between American and Japanese automakers to satisfy Japanese automaker concerns about protection and fuel economy. Whichever Japanese blender formulated that "Honda" motor oil that Shannow bought was fully aware that ILSAC GF-4 carries with it the same engine protection requirements as API "SM". The difference is that GF-4 also carries with it fuel economy provisions that the API only addresses with its additional silly starburst seal that confuses more than it enlightens. (This was all covered in detail by Lube Report during the wranglings leading to eventual agreement between automakers and motor oil formulators for the then upcoming "SM" standard.) I'm still of the opinion that the Honda oil's blender simply used the last API rating for which it a license. Any ILSAC GF-4 oil is definitely superior to any oil specifically blended to the obsolete SJ specfication. Or to put it another way, it's impossible to have a true GF-4 blend that could only measure up to the API's SJ spec.
I looked at the bottle. It said it used an SF formulation and was for cars made before 1988. There was no API donut symol or other, just that statement that it would not meet new car warranty requirements.
Fwiw, the 2006 Sonata V6 I looked at has 5w20 GF-3 printed on the oil cap.
What about the SF oil then? Our local grocery store has this SF oil on the shelves? More additives that were later removed?
An oil rated SF is another story. For one thing it can't be a genuine API SF oil because API says SF is obsolete and no longer approves oil as SF.
I went to Walmart last night, and found that 5qt jugs of 'SM' Havoline were $10 and a few pennies. I picked up a couple for some upcoming oil changes on both of my vehicles. I did not see any 'SJ' but I did see that above the SM jugs was another price tag... that was almost $1 lower that what I paid... I wonder if that was where the SJ jugs were.. anyhow.. Walmart seems to be really low on stock with everything... no regular M1 in 5qt, a few Extended 5qt, plentiful GTX and Penz... and also suprisingly, NO SuperTech conventional at all.. bare shelves... Is this basically what everyone else is finding?
It just depends on who does the stocking. Right now we have plentiful stocks of Supertech down here yet Maxlife is thinning out. I saw a real preppy looking 40ish guy putting some Rotella T Synthetic in his buggy. I had to restrain myself from starting up a conversation to see why he picked it.

Saw a woman the other day at the Village Market grocery store. She was eyeballing the oils on the shelf. I came back around and she had picked 2 quarts of an SA oil. Price was aroudn 2.29/qt. She could have at leat gotten SuperTech synthetic for that price at the local WalMart. These old oil forumlas really ought to have big WARNING stickers on them about not using them in modern day vehicles!!
