Hello,

The second OE muffler has rusted out on our 94 integra. Thinking of going with a walker quiet flow 3 instead, as my impression is that they are of decent, and OE-equivalent design and quality.

Any opinions???

Thanks!

It will not last as long as the O.E muffler. It will also get louder as time goes on.

interesting.

Neither we nor our friend who also has an integra have had good success with OE honda exhaust and radiators. I have to wonder how much worse this can be than OE, which is pretty poor.

Thanks for the insight. I wish I could find a decent stainless unit that will last, and isnt a ---- can. Any suggestions? Just want OE sound.

Regardless of brand, aftermarket mufflers come in two basic versions.

Version 1.(best); Double wrap shell, actually 2 layers of 24gauge (I think) with crimped seams opposite of each other. 3 internal tubes, 1 in,1 out,1 internal. three internal baffles spaced equally.

Version 2. Basic muffler shop, parts store, economy design. Single wrap shell, sometimes slightly thicker than individual layers of a dual wrap. 2 tubes, 1in, 1out. held in place by 2 equally spaced baffles.

No real difference in decibell level between the two, but premium 3tube 3baffle has less "cackle, crackle, hum, harmonic dissonance" or whatever you wish to call it.

Every major brand has both. No real difference between brands as long as you are comparing same level of product.

I had stainless steel Sonic Turbos on a 69 Dodge Charger a while back. They never even got rust spots on them. They seemed very tough and did not sound bad.

My Integra has gone through 3 mufflers/b-pipes. They're simply poorly designed and rust out/break very easily. I have a friend using an aftermarket header/cat-back exhaust system and he hasn't had any trouble with it yet. I know once this muffler/pipe gives out I'm definitely going to switch to aftermarket. Most likely apexi. It will most likely last longer than OEM.

IMHO walkers are crraap and the quality is downright terrible.

If you are to compare with factory Toys, Mazdas or Hondas which are typically made with 16gauge or 18 gauge steel, typical Maremont or Walker are made with 24 gauge steel sheets rolled into form, even though they are aluminised, they still cannot hold the rust very well and typically will rust out in no more than 3 years max. here in BeeCee (I got cheep walkers rusted through in 8mnths time). To add injuries to insult: most walkers/maremont or cheep bosais pipings are interference fit as opposed to welded, so they will fall off easily.

Me? I pay a bit extra and get factory so long as they are available.

My 2c's worth.

Buy a Brosal stock replacement. I swear they have a lifetime warranty.

Since they are bolted on with 2 bolts and taper gasket they are easily replaced.

But from what Ive seen, the Honda part is very much crrap too, depite having a honda name on it. ThirdYe has more or less confirmed it.

The thing is, on our 94 toyota, and our 94 mitsubishi, not to mention our 83, 85, and 96 MB, 91 BMW, and 97 plymouth, all original exhaust parts are still present after 110-250k miles on each of them, except for the resonator on the 83 car. Why should this honda part fail multiple times under the same conditons??? I have come to excpect long life from modern exhaust systems. From our cheaper cars in the early to mid 1980s? not so much, and I remember going with my father to the shop to have parts replaced from time to time. Even our 89 corolla had a muffler that went after 3 or so years, but these problems seem to have been all but solved for at least our area, where a lot of salt and cinders are indeed used in the wintertime.

So, all that said, I have to wonder if the walkers that you are talking about are the low end ones, or the OE-equivalent ones. Per one of the first replies, there is a difference... Id buy the OE-equivalent one.

I dont mind buying OE parts, and in fact, unless Ive seen a documented difference or improvement over them for some application, I always do buy them. However, for a lot of Honda parts, it is becoming "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me" type scenario.

I appreciate the insight very much!

JHZR2-

The Honda mufflers I purchased so far are straight from Honda with Sanken stamped on it. They typically cost me in excess of 200bucks and comes with a warranty too.

Lately, I realised that there are some so-called "factory approved" aftermarket muffler provided by dealers (e.g. Nissan") that are just little more than Bosai line of OE fit products. My friend bought into this for his 91 Sentra (the EFI version, not the boxy version) and it disintegrated in 3 yrs time.Although it came with a warranty from factory, he is now into his 3rd replacement and bringing the vehicle back to have muffler replaced deemed too much for him now.

I just installed a budget muffler and tailpipe, Walker I think, on my son's new old truck. It was $70 with clamps and such. It didn't look like I needed to replace the headers and two cats too. Since it's a 15 year old truck it didn't make sense putting a fancy stainless steel muffler and tailpipe on a system that might need replacing in a year or a few years. When I need to replace the whole system I'll look at stainless.

I've never had a Walker muffler last longer than 3 years. But if you don't mind the labor, most of them are lifetime warranty now. The Walker pipes go at about the same time too so you'll be buying those unless they're a welded assembly with the muffler.
