Well here's a new one by me:

On the left you can search by VIN but they spent the appropriate money for a data haul and they let any nerd off the street type in the shorter plate number. Tell 'em you want an EPA catalytic convertor on the drill down menu. Or, possibly, a california one.

Works for my car. Shows year and engine, what more do you need?

This would be cool, say, if you see a car on craigslist and can make out the license plate, but the seller doesn't state what engine is installed.

Evil uses:

My state lets me reserve/check vanity plates online but the good ones are all sold. They only tell me go/no go, they don't say who has what I want. "THESTIG" drives a 2006 Mazda 6.

Plate #1 usually belongs to the governor, see what he drives.

Over here all the parts suppliers want is the rego plate, then they have complete VIN, chassis and engine No. Saves reciting make, model, year, chassis, engine codes...then doing it all again when they ask what year. It's all on Carjam.
