Wait for GF5 or bag bargains until it's official?

Does anyone think GF5 is so good that it's worth passing up the inevitable special offers until it launches? I have enough for over a year now and am wondering whether to increase my stash over the next few months as those offers come up.

Why wait? Current oil works fine in our cars, might as well buy it and use it if its on sale. [censored], I still use old SL rated oils that have been sitting on shelves for a few years.

I just bought 3.5 years worth of SynPower for my Aveo. Got it for $1.35 a quart after rebate. Who's to say that there won't be some bugs to work out with the new formulations anyway.

SM/GF-4 is good stuff. If the oil companies need to mark down to reduce inventory, it's a bonus for me. I'll take the deals any way I can get them. I'll get to SN/GF-5 later.

I'm thinking some of the oils out there already meet the GF-5 spec and are awaiting a label change and the official launch. For example, according to a phone conversation I had with Castrol, Edge already meets the GF-5 specs. I would think PU, would as well as some others.

This is the only issue I have with the BITOG stash/hoard mentality for oil. Seen lots of posts where folks returned half their stash for store credit to buy the latest & greatest formulations.

On one hand if you aren't the kind of person who cares about flashy adverts or the latest formulation & find a smokin' deal on an oil you can use in several of your vehicles it makes sense to stock up on a reasonable amount of it. I've got a case of Schaeffer 9000 in the basement and will probably take a couple years to go through it... but I'm not a compulsive 'gotta try everything' oil changer.

If you always want to try the newest oil available, I wouldn't bother buying any oil until you needed to do a change.

I'm not passing up a sale or close out i've got enough oil for my grand kids but still buying,it'll keep and get used.

doesnt oil get bad just laying around for a few years ? I buy as I need also, currently I have 2 quarts PP 5w30 left over from my Jaguars change.

And I also I 4 qts if a mix of oils I had, 2 quarts leftover MC 5w20blend + 1.75 qts Castrol HM 5w30 + 1/2 qts "strauss" 5w30 synthetic. Thats going to go into my 2010 Civic LX at next change, its specifies 5w20 and thats what I have in it now .

Nope, just shake a bottle before dumping in it. Even a partial container will be OK, as long it is sealed tightly.

One caveat is for RLI. Its shelf life is 2 years.

I bought four cases of MC 5w-20 when WalMart was pulling MC at the time. I remember it being a great deal at the time, however..... its was the SL/SM version not the true SM version. UOAs showed slightly better in the official SM version.

If you stash your oil and follow an OLM, you will be stuck with four cases for a good while.

Redline Inc. A boutique oil.
I have a few Mobil and Valvoline oils that are at least 5 years old (Both SL and SM spec). I am planning on using them next spring.
