Wagner pad decision

I've got the OEX pads on our 08 Expedition. They have been the only pad that have been quiet in that rig. The ThermoSqueals were the worst, BTW. As for the pedal feel, that Expedition has never had neck snapping brakes but the OEX are at least as good as anything else I've used in it. They've worn pretty well, too.

In your case, it looks like Driv sourced that application from Ferodo in the UK/Europe and sold them as ThermoQuiets. Wagner does that to many of their European applications. FER5100 GG is the AMECA edge code/FMSI friction coefficient.

I’ve had hit or miss with TQs, worked fine on a Subaru, but they were shimmed. On a Toyota and a Lexus, they were great for stopping but also made noise as the pads shifted in the calipers and when the caliper piston cut through the IMI insulator.

It is entirely possible my pads came from Ferodo. However, the pad compound is supposed to be specific to the Wagner OE25 brand and type. In other words, a Wagner TQ semi metallic pad for an F150 or Jaguar has the same pad material. The differences lie in the pad configuration, backing, shims and edge bevel, not the compound.

I have ThermoQuiets on my dump truck. They handle some pretty heavy braking with confidence. Very happy with them for a reasonably priced pad.

I do think a lot has to do with the original braking system. If its an under performing braking system, nothing can overcome that.

2x on a weak OE system. My '99 Yukon brakes were weak, even with the towing package. Nothing improved that single piston system, trying all sorts of pads, rotors and even stainless hoses didn't do much. No wonder they went to dual piston calipers in later model changes.
I wasn't going to an aftermarket upgrade kit due to costs vs worth of the truck.

Update. Wagner Techline wrote back today to say its Engineering Department confirmed the pads were reformulated to remove Cu and are now FF. Said pads were legitimate. Rockauto refunded pads and shipping. Techline personnel need to craft their messages better. I am still disappointed that pictures from authorized distributor websites do not match products shipped.

So, was Duralast GG? The problem with house brands is you have no idea who they're souring from or what quality they seek. The house brands can change faster than the name brands do :sneaky:

Wagner might be part of some private equity portfolio, which is why they have no idea what they started using afterwards. See also: Centric and Raybestos :cautious:

Another possibility might be a reformulation to remove copper. Most brake pads with the sane name and part numbers are different than what was made a few years ago because of legislation regarding copper in brake pads. Ceramic and organic/NAO pads had some copper in them before.

The EBC Blackstuff I mentioned earlier never possibly contained copper, as they advertise it having zero metallic fibers.

Did you take any pics of the Duralast pads you got before installing them?
Duralast DE1212 pads were GG. Did not take any pictures. You were right about the reformulation.

I have Powerstop Z17 pads on my Saturn Vue now. Put them on in 2020 with geomet rotors and they felt great. Previous pads were installed by a shop but had no idea what they were but I could feel the difference. Last fall I had a rear caliper go bad and chewed up a rotor. Replaced caliper and rotor, new Z17 pads all around, still feel the same. My son did the work both times. He said fronts were still good but I rather have new pads all around. They’re quiet and stay fairly clean. I’ll be doing pads on the Tempest in a few weeks. Maybe Z23 pads because it’s kind of a hot rod.

I’ve decided to stick with the Z17’s. The Wagner oex once they were in my hands I just saw complete garbage I got a refund from eBay.
