Currently running Mobil 1 5w40. Since I am burning a lil oil in my Dodge V10 w/116k miles, I thought of maybe switching to Amsoil 10w40. Would this help with the oil consumption?

Well, since it is just a lil oil burning, maybe the thicker base oil of the 10w40 will help. Next you can try 15w40, if Amsoil makes that in PCMO. In AZ I would think 15w40 could go year round.

I live in Flagstaff, AZ. It's 7k altitude, doesn't get over 90 degs here in the summer from what I hear.

I'm actually considering Valv. 10w40 durablend to see how that runs...

Define little?

Have you been maintaining your truck with a proper tuneup including a new PCV valve?

Running thicker oil is just a coverup for the real problem casuing the consumption.

Truck has been very babied. Just got a full tuneup, doesn't have a PCV, it has a CCV that was recently cleaned. It consumes about 1 qt every 2k miles... No leaks, etc. It's been running Mobil 1 5w40 for about a year now.

When did the oil start burning or has it always been a oil burner? What oil viscosities were you using prior to that? What OCI intervals prior to the burning? What is your driving history on it?Perhaps a candidate for auto-rx if burning only started recently.

Don't feel bad. My wifes Aerostar 3.0 has always used oil. It consumes a quart every 1000 miles. I ran Synpower oil in it to try some cleaning and it got dirty pretty quick. Now have Napa Synthetic with a half quart Redline which may do some more cleaning with the Redline esters. Also have been running Schaeffers Neutra at one oz per gallon for the last couple thousand miles. Hoping to reduce the oil consumption. Maybe working, but too soon to tell.
