Had it delivered last week from Doug Demuro's auction site Cars & Bids: Auctions of cool modern cars, trucks, and SUVs (carsandbids.com)

I always wanted one and remember when they were first out - these were $40K new and I probably made that n 2003..hahaha. I've been spending time going over it an fixing any minor things that I can. Only major things I see are d. side CV boot torn, center diff rear seal leaking, and a/c compressor doesn't appear to be working. I am a VW guy and have the necessary scan tool etc. and the a/c appears to be a fualty high pressure switch. Will be having my trusted Euro/VW shop spend a day with it and look at the issues that I will not be tackling. Interior is immaculate and nearly everything is functional. I'll likely lower it on sport springs and do some sort of custom exhaust to unleash the glorious W8 sound! Had an oil change before I took delivery using M1 0W40 so good there but likely will add some Liquimoly Motor Oil Saver to help with a few weeps.

Pretty cool, I totally forgot about these. I have been scrolling through Cars and Bids every so often, some really neat cars have been showing up.

So cool, I chickened out on a w8 when I was younger (probably a good decision) always wanted to buy a Passat or Phaeton from this era, never had the garage space or wrenching skills to keep one on the road. Iirc based on my test drive in one these engines are incredibly smooth and have that Gulfstream/v12 whoosh type of fast acceleration.

I went to the auction site and prices seem to good to be true. What's your strategy for buying cars at auction???
Set a budget and don't over-spend. I did neither...AHAAHAHAHAHA. No real magic, just figure out what it's worth to you.

Nice car! One of the first things on my list would be getting rid of that Mickey Mouse air filter and putting the original box back in. Nothing like letting it breath hot air from the engine compartment.
AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA - I put that in b/c I like the sound. The W8 crew has made some custom heat shields so I'm going to look at doing one. Folks get so worked up over these filters, it's nice to hear your engine's induction noise and if it gets a 10hp loss from warmer air in the summer, so be it. This isn't a performance car at 4K pounds and 275hp, it's a highway cruiser and this won't cause any drama.

These are a nightmare but I'm well-versed in this gen VW - had a MK4 Jetta from new to 220K/14 years. You just need patience. This will get driven a few K a year for fun. Hope it holds together.

Can you share some MK4 experiences, last year I acquired a 2003 MK4 manual very fun car to drive. What are some of the pitfalls, I am awared of the crack pipe stuff and recently found out about the wholes in the blend doors.

Wishful thinking on my part. Make sure you change the fluid in the 5HP often!
Stick would hvae been mind-blowing but it would have cost significantly more so happy with that Tiptronic! Interestingly enough, the trans has been changed in the last few years according to the dealer I got it from (must have been the second owner) - tag on trans would suggest that's true. Should be fine but yes, lots of TLC!

We got a new 2000 MK4 Jetta GL in '99. GL was the base so crank windows, no real comfort/convience features which is part of why it lasted as long as it did with us. 2.0 (2.slow) was great with what I consider typical issues (coolant o-ring fail, blah blah blah). Our was the 5-spd and that car went on the OG clutch until it's death at nearly 300K with the second owner from what I understand. Not much to comment on beyond the interiors fall apart with time in the UV. Door regulators fail/break (plastic) so windows fall in. AC would blow degraded foam from the ducts randomly.
