I'm getting ready to put new hoses on my 2007 Jetta. I have no idea if the fluid has ever been changed but leaning towards no. The manual states VW 501 14 brake fluid for 'optimum performance of the brake system' but if not available or you prefer to use other brake fluid qualities for other reasons you may use any other brake fluid that complies with DOT 4.

I think the 501 14 is DOT 4 LV correct? Plain DOT 4 is a bit cheaper and easier to get locally. Would like to hear any experiences with these fluids from other MK V Jetta or Rabbit guys. Thanks.

Either will work.
The lowest winter temperatures we see are 5-10 degrees Fahrenheit above zero a few days per year, with ~25 being more typical; do you think there would be a discernible difference in performance between those fluids at those temps? I'm located in northern GA btw.

I run DOT4 in BMW and VW, and I see temperatures far lower than that. Both recommend LV.
