I totaled the rover and got a nice '04 passat wagon with 4motion and 94k miles. I have a bunch of rotella and Mobil 1 5w40 oil but was wondering what ATF and Gear oil I should use. I would like to use some redline but should I just stick with the correct VW fluids?

Go to the AMSOIL website and look up the recommendations. Will give you the requirements, even if you don't use AMSOIL.

ATF = Maxlife and diff oil = Mobil 1.
ATF+4 for the PSF, which I HIGHLY recommending flushing immediately, even before the driveline service.

Don't worry about brands of ATF+4, it's a licenced product, they are all the same. I use WalMart ST for $4.

I was by advanced auto so I picked up the castrol ATF+4 for $5. By the looks and smell of the old fluid though it was already flushed out with ATF+4 quite recently unless VW PAS fluid is that reddish color. Now to do the timing belt and service the diffs and ATF. Hmm, I wonder if it ended up with Dexron III, which is more likely than +4. I'd still flush it, but it's good that it was done already WITH an ATF...maybe just topped off though.
btw- you realize ATF+4 is not THE VW fluid, just a better substitute. Mercedes (and Chrysler) use +4, MB coming from Pentosin.
Same thing with the MaxLife, it's very good and a Valvoline approved substitute for the $15/litre Esso LT-17741.

AJ, I believe that ESSO fluid is LT-71141. It was designed a very long time ago as a much more stable version of Dexron-III with frictional characteristics to match. I personally know the formulator and patent holder of this product who has long since retired from Esso Europe.
There are many good substitutes for the LT71141 today but back in it's day there wasn't much to compare it to.
Personally I'd stick with CHF11S in the powersteering unit.

Yes I do realize. I used maxlife in the rover and in the corolla also. It is a great inexpensive syn ATF. Looking at how much of a pain it is to service the driveline it makes me miss the rover.

The best trans service was the Honda, it took JUST a 3/8" ratchet, not even a socket! Compared to the fiasco of the Audi trans....
Still, worth the effort.

Any full synthetic or boutique ATF should work well. If you like Redline, D4 is a great choice. RoyalPurple, Amsoil, Amalie, Maxlife... are some others.
