On Volkswagen most knocking noises can be fixed with different grades of fuel. Seen to many get torn down only to find no problem but they put new motor in then sent old one in for core only to have "knock" still there.

We run Shell V-Power (93) exclusively. What experience do you have to back up that claim? Just curious.

Working full service station as well as dealership. Used car market was full of Volkswagen Jetta. Seemed like high pressure fuel pumps were knocking and people were trading them in. Several were headed to auction and I would put 89 octane in then noise disappeared. Sold a few which we filled with 89 then customer came back with a knock when they went cheap. Explained that to customers. Volkswagen stated noise was normal.

There shouldn't be any reason that higher octane fuel would cause the HPFP specifically to make noise over any other, unless 89 happened to be Ethanol free (highly unlikely). It could in theory affect timing advance but modern engines are designed to pull timing to avoid knock before it begins. You can run any modern high performance engine on 87 octane, even if they "require" premium. Well, anything from a mainstream automaker. BMW and Mercedes aren't stupid, they aren't gonna program their engine to self destruct because rental car company customers put regular in (which they do, 100% of the time I can almost guarantee).

I wonder if knock is actually some other resonance being heard, something vibrating because ignition could be more advanced due to higher octane. Like sothing rattling on or in the engine instead.
