I know this is a cheap engine that is underpowered (115hp/122lb torque). Just wondering what oil everyone here (or know someone) with the 2.0L engine use.

2002 VW Jetta GLS, ~24,700 miles

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40, no noticeable oil consumption

Interval-about 6 months, this car doesn't do that many miles a year so I just change it twice a year.

I have a 1.8 VW (1987 Jetta) …close

. The 2.0 was the evolution of the 1.8. These 2valve/cyl VW engines have a pretty good reputation for being very robust engines. The hydraulic valves run straight across the head directly under the camshaft (no levers) -- very simple design.

I run a 5w30 synthetic blend year round (need good winter performance) and my target OCI is 1year/8,000km (5k miles). I’ve run past 8000kms and well past a year (lower kms) depending on the situation. Although, these new SM/GF-4 Grp II/II+ 5w30’s are so appealing I started building a stash of regular oils.

With a synthetic like PP, depending on the miles, a once a year OCI should be no problem. With a newer engine in a warmer climate, my target with a synthetic like PP would probably be ~ 2 year/7k miles OCI.

00 or 01 Golf 2.0

Mobil 1 10w30 EP
Mobil 1 M1-205 Oil Filter

10K/1-yr

Not my car, but last time I checked, it still runs!

Mom has a 96 Passat. It got Castrol 15w40 2x/year since new. No consumption, 8k of city driving a year. I dumped some random synths in it for the last 2 years, now she will get strait Delo 30 2x a year(car is garaged) re-using the filter.

01 New Beetle 2.0L

Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40. OCI every 6 months. The car only has 25K on it. Why do you think this engine is cheap? Just because it only has 115hp, doesn't make it cheap.

As long as you use something that is at least API SJ, anything from 5w30 to 20w50, & change it at reasonable intervals, the rest of that VW will rust away before the engine ever wears out.

I have a '00 GTI with the 1.8T. It has 75k miles on it. I have used the following oils in it, with good results across the board:

SuperTech 5w30
Castrol GTX 5w30
Mobil 1 0w40
GC 0w30
Maxlife Synthetic 10w30

I've had several of the 1.8L and 2.0L, normally aspirated Jettas. I saw better results running the Amsoil xw-30 synthetics than I did with the heavier stuff. I'd recommend the Amsoil 0w30 or Series 3000, 5w30 synthetic with a 15k/1 yr service interval.

This is an ideal engine to run very long service intervals.

Yes I meant its cheap because its the base model and cost the least. I'm sure this engine will last a while. Some people call this engine 2.0 slow or 2.slow, something like that.

I'll just change it once a year, probably does less than 5000 miles a year. I'll stick with a VW 502 oil and use Napa,Purolator,STP or OEM filters.

I had the 1.8L and it didn't like cheap dinos 5w30s that sheared down quickly, but that was many years ago. Ran the snot out of that engine since it was so underpowered, but it was still running fine when I sold it at 150K.

My SIL had a 1999 Jetta. Basic model, GL I think? First year of the past body style. It had the 2.0L with a 5spd. She ran the heck out of it, saw only kwiki-loob oil/filters at *extended* OCI's. Every time I checked the oil it was low. A few times I checked it to find NOTHING on the stick!! That would usually require a 2+ quart top up!

I'd top it up with what ever I had on hand. Usually 5w30, 10w30. That 4 banger still ran like a top having seen many loooong, hi speed hyway runs on around a half sump of oil! She sold it in 2003 with over 100Kmi on the ticker. That's a great 4cyl.

My mom has a 2001 Golf with this engine in it and I'm running German Castrol 0w30 in there. I just posted a UOA for it a few weeks ago actually.

I had a '95 Jetta with this engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. It had free oil changes for 2 years or 24,000 miles, and the Volkswagen dealer always used Castrol 20W50 in it. It was changed every 7500 miles.

No problems, but it was a lease and I turned it back in with slightly less that 48,000 miles on it.
