I drive a 2018 Honda Pilot. The Pilot is on its 3rd OC with 0w-20 VRP. Right now that is 10k on VRP. Pilot seems to have better power and fuel economy. Most noticeable is very quiet idle. What are the VRP anti-wear and anti -friction additives? Are these additives unique to VRP?(probably not). I am very impressed with this oil so far.

If you’re impressed, use it. Most of the measurements you’re claiming are unable to be verified via documented equipment like SPL meters and UOAs; so if you’re happy and your engine is running well, carry on. But fuel mileage and noise are not two things that can be quantified to distinguish oils with a $30 UOA or an $40 SPL meter.

The J35 is a good engine. We have one in our 2024 Odyssey.

You might want to reconsider that mileage on an oil change - these are GDI engines and like to dilute the oil with fuel and contaminate it with soot.

I do 5000 mile OCIs in ours for that reason, regardless of the maintenance minder, and I don’t use 20 grade.

Like most, if not all, modern oils, VRP’s main anti-wear additive is ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate), and its main anti-friction additives are molybdenum and boron. But those elements also do more than just reduce friction.

VRP does have some unique additives, but I think they’re focused more on cleaning. There is speculation on what those compounds might be.
 
Forgot to mention that I use Valvoline EP 5W-30 and it has a good chunk of moly. I think ~50% more than the RP line.

@STMech I’m experiencing the same engine response to VRP that you are.

My 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has the 3.6 V6 engine with 186,000 miles. It runs quieter and smoother with this oil than any I’ve run previously, and I’ve always used a high quality synthetic since new.

Prior to running VRP the engine oil consumption was about 1 quart per 3,000. I changed the first installment of VRP after 6,000 miles during which I added one quart of oil. I’m 1,500 miles into the second installment of VRP and the oil level hasn’t dropped; still at the full mark. FWIW fuel mileage has increased to 21 mpg from 18 mpg which was prior to using VRP. The fuel economy increase happened after the second installment of VRP. However, to be fair, summer blended fuel vs winter blended fuel may be responsible for part of the increase. Prior to VRP the best fuel economy was 19.5 mpg during my ownership of this vehicle.
 
I recently bought a used Chrysler minivan circa 2000 with 157k miles on the motor.
It wasn't too bad inside but there is some of that brownish coating on valve train parts etc.

So instead of changing completely to VRP I used 4 quarts of my usual oil and one quart of VRP.

I don't notice it being quieter, and I still can't keep up with Corvettes (maybe if I use 5 qts VRP?), but I do notice the oil gets dirty very quickly compared to when I do not use any VRP. So I can vouch for the cleaning power of VRP, but not any improvements otherwise (so far).

You may wish to peruse some of the numerous other existing threads on this topic. Unless this is just a testimonial, you seem to already know the topic has been pretty thoroughly discussed.

Just personally, I like to start a new discussion of my interests in the today, here and now, regardless. Things change.

Well, Maybe if there was a dedicated thread to VRP that would keep it from popping up as a new thread as often?
He may feel he needs info specific to his Honda Pilot.
I once ran a forum and I learned that beating up newbies is not the best way to increase the community.

Those Honda Pilots sure are peppy these days.
Some members above posted what they believe are the additives. I would think they must be somewhat different or all oils would work the same, but VRP seems to clean exceptionally well.

If it works for you that is great. I would like to hear your opinion a year or so from now. I haven't read much negative about it.
I think ppl are curious about it and it has gained a somewhat mystical aura.
 
It’s a good testimonial. Personally I like hearing about people’s experience with whatever oil they are using, it’s a big part of why I joined this forum. I think every new post about someone’s experience with Valvoline Restore and Protect is especially valuable seeing as it is still a relatively new oil.

Are there a lot of posts about it? Of course, it’s the most recent exciting new thing to come out of the PCMO industry.
