volume question

I'm giving my '00 Civic EX an oil change this weekend. It's got ~116,500 miles. Runs great. Will be using Mobil 7500 and a PureOne filter. Plan to change it out at 5,000 miles and send a sample in to Blackstone & Terry.

Here's my question. The manual calls for 3.5 quarts at an oil & filter change. Are there any concievable problems I could run into if I just put in 4 qts?

1/2 a quart over is not a big deal, I would just put 3.5 in and then check it, and put it right on the line. Use the half quart for topping up if it needs it (ya right like hondas use oil

"Any concievable" problems, yes. "Probable problems", no.

I change the oil for a friend of mine. He has the same dilema, with a Saturn I think. He always tells me to put in 4 qts and not to worry about the little extra. So far, no problems!

You might try checking for aeration of the oil. Drive agressively with some high-G start, stops and right-left turns. Safely pull over and immediately look for bubbles or foam on the dipstick.

I don't know about the civic engines, but I know on the 4.5 qt capacity GM 3.1's that if you continuously fill to 5 quarts then you stand a good chance of developing massive seal leaks.
