Very Expensive Oil Change

Running the oil change that came with our new used 2012 Jeep Patriot 8k miles. Can you imagine how much I paid for that oil change? Per the owners manual 8k is the max allowed interval, conventional or synthetic. Considering the cost of a new vehicle I can't see a reason to drain the oil that came with it earlier than the max allowed interval.

Last time we took the wife's Liberty to the dealer, that oil change ended up costing $28K. We did talk them into giving us a new Wrangler though.

He was making a joke. Its not that hard to comprehend.

Personally if it were me, on a new used vehicle, I'd run it out to 4-5000 miles and then drain and refill with my favorite flavor of full synthetic. THEN run it out to the max mileage interval as recommended by the owners manual. That way I know (peace of mind) its not some inferior bulk oil from the dealership, or driving around wondering what the last person who changed the oil put in there...

Also, I cant believe how shameless these dealerships are. Every time my friend brings his mint condition 2008 Envoy Denali (with only 13k miles!) in for service, they tell him that they "need his truck" and keep trying to push him into buying a new car. It does not work on him, but I can only imagine how many people it DOES work on and the service department gets to send a person over to new cars to write up a deal.

Not seeing the connection. Maintenance is needed when it's needed, regardless what the vehicle originally cost.

That is the problem, not knowing when or IF the oil in the car was changed.

I would change it ASAP, cheap insurance.

When I bought my used Corvette from the dealer, they changed the oil while I was there, before they gave me the car. I also had a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty on it.

Up to you. I don't worry about oil changes vs cost of vehicle. I do 5k or 6 months at local Goodyear with free tire rotations for less than 40.00 twice a year with midgrade oil semi synthetic. Of course I don't put many miles on vehicles and tend to keep for awhile. Less than 80 a year for 10 years is only 800 so unless you are driving lots of miles say 40k a year that would be 320 a year and still only 3200 on 10 years and 400k. Point is cheap insurance to get most out of vehicle you worked hard to get.
