I would take varnish over sludge....eventhough it looks ugly when you take off the valve cover.

A big +1 to that! Varnish is pretty much harmless. We've had good luck with MMO slowly removing it. Try adding a pint to the oil about 1000 miles before you change your oil, over time it will clean it up. Or run a good synthetic and forget about it, in time something like PP should clean it up.

Any oil changed regularly will slowly remove varnish. Some will dissolve and some will flake off. I've seen a varnished engine come 50% clean after about 50,000 miles of regular changes.

+1 some oils even stain engine internals, totally harmless.
 
Kinda like Skid-Marks in your white'ees... Totally harmless!
