How can you get rid of varnish? Looking through the oil fill hole I can see varnish and btw is it harmful to the engine?

Whether it is harmful depends how much and where it is. A full synthetic will do a good job of removing it over time.

I would take varnish over sludge....eventhough it looks ugly when you take off the valve cover.

A big +1 to that! Varnish is pretty much harmless. We've had good luck with MMO slowly removing it. Try adding a pint to the oil about 1000 miles before you change your oil, over time it will clean it up. Or run a good synthetic and forget about it, in time something like PP should clean it up.

Any oil changed regularly will slowly remove varnish. Some will dissolve and some will flake off. I've seen a varnished engine come 50% clean after about 50,000 miles of regular changes.
