Hello,
Does anyone have any good or bad info on this oil?
dunno.gif
I was reading the label and it said Corvette approved.Fits my bill as I'm past due on OC.
Even better,its on clearance!

Thanks for any input!

Go the Valvoline Techology and look it up.

In the MSDS section, the 20w50 Synpower CAS # (look them up here with a search) is apparently PAO, whereas the other Synpowers are Group III CAS #.

Then go to the product information section and look at the SM Synpower. The 20w50 and 5w40 still have SL levels of zinc and phosphorus. Also they are ACEA A3 and a lot of other tough specs.

Thanks for the reply!
As far as I can tell, the oil meets spec.
I don't race or anything(unless provoked

,you wouldn't believe the youngsters that pull up alongside and rev their engines!).I just keep cruising along

I have 166k miles on this car and would like to pop 250k

I have been using M1 since 1985,back when the bottles said 25k or one year OC interval.Maybe M1 has gone down hill since then.Don't mean to knock it but when pushing for 10k OCI's the new stuff just doesn't hold up as well!

(Or so it seems)
I am not an expert on oil, just been using synthetics for quite awhile.(Motorcycles, cars, heavy machinery, diesels, lawn equipment;anything that requires motor oil!)
I really like the PAO based lubes, they hold up well!
Does any one have any different thoughts on this?
Once again, thanks for the reply!I'm a newbie and need ALL the help I can get!

PAO is Group IV and true synthetic (vs Group III being dino-synthetic). Maybe you should research Redline Oil. It is Group V synthetic--ester. Killer stuff (but pricey) and loaded with zinc, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Some have posted used oil analysis on this site running one quart Redline to the rest Mobil 1 with very nice results.

Thanks for the link.Been having some problems
with internet connection so I haven't been able
to view yet. Also, thanks for info on 20w-50 being PAO based lube.

TallPaul,
Thanks for the reply.I have a question regarding ester based and PAO compatibilty.
Basically, when dealing with refrigerant and compressor oils, the manufacturers usually always state one or the other(ie:no mixing).
dunno.gif

Do you think this incompatibility would be applicable to motor oil?
Thanks and please understand that I'm a newbie!

So it seems anyway, but could just be a mistake in the Valvoline product data sheet.

In non-motor oil applications there is a lot of non-intermixability of oils. With motor oil most anything probably is mixable. I contacted Redline and they did not have any problems with my mixing in Redline with my Valvoline Maxlife.

Thanks for the info TallPaul!
You have a good point.
All lubricants today seem to
say "compatible with all motor oil".
Personally,I have never experienced any product
clash or incompatibility.
Just thinking too hard!

A mind is a terrible thing to lose!

Do you think I should buy all I can for $2.00
a quart?
Seems like a good price, Pao based or not, to me.
Your thoughts?

$2 a quart is a great price for Group III synthetic. I would not hesitate. Jump on it, but that only if you really can use 20w50. If not, you could get a few quarts for those times you want to thicken up some oil.

Oh yeah, meant to say MSDS not product data sheet, but there could be errors there too.

I would say you are correct. Many oils use the wording of meeting the engine protection requirements of 4718M (Corvette). This is not a recommended grade by GM.

The Valvoline web site data sheets only list 5w30 and 10w30 Synpower as actually being approved.

Regardless of the technical merits of any oil's basestock and additive package, viscosity is an important factor.

20W-50 may not be the most appropriate viccosity for most modern vehicles. The Synpower is 20+ cst.

Thanks to everyone for input!
I thought about what was said and went with M1
15-50W 2 QTS,0-40W 2 QTS.& 5-40 1 QT.Probably not the best blend, but all were on sale minus Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w40.Good change from Castrol Syntec 5-50w,engine really revs smooth and idles very quietly.Strictly seat of the pants impression!

I will try to push this oil to minumum of 10k
OCI.Lots of highway miles so should be okay.
Had to go with POA based lubes after using 5-50 Castrol(decent, but not up to extended drains).
Once again ,Thanks for input and any comments on new mix would be appreciated!
